What is RFID ?
• RFID- describes the use of radio frequency signals to provide
automatic identification of items.
• works in various range of frequencies
1. Low-frequency RFID systems ( 30 KHz to 500 KHz )
2. High-frequency RFID systems ( 850 MHz to 950 MHz and
2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz )
Parts of RFID
an RFID device ( transponder/tag)
an Antenna
a Reader
In addition to this equipment, the system includes
application-specific software.
Significance
RFID Label
Consists microchip
inside., that contains data
about the item.
chips Chip can be programmable
( read / write )
Antenna
Transmits radio
frequency signals to
activate the tag
Reader Reader = transceiver +
antenna
Transceiver = transmitter +
reciever
Reads data inside the tag
antenna Reader
RF Control
Module module
Host
computer
tag
Real-life applications
RETAILING :
Eg:
RFID tag used in wal-mart
RFID Vs Barcode
Characteristics :
Nature of signals
Line of sight
Quantity of Data
Scanning Capacity
Ruggedness
RFID in living bodies !!
RFID-Health Care Industry
Patient identification
Supply chain tracking
1. keep track of all medicines from the suppliers
2 .high price pharmaceuticals are highly
protected.
Automated billing
Vehicle identification system
vehicle fitted with an
electronic tag
transmit ID to ground
loop…………
data fed at roadside
equipment or
accurate computer
systems
Electronic Road Pricing ( ERP ) gantry in Singapore
Collects tolls in heavilly
crowded traffic areas
in Singapore.
This is by means of
employing active
RFID tags known as
cashcards.
Shelf management
Check- in/out service
Self Check-in/out
Tagging
Anti-theft detection
Problems with RFID
Privacy Concern :
Tracking individual movements without
the knowledge of him.
Security Concern :
Cloning of passport of an individual
providing insecurity to him/her.
The Proposed system previously adopted is :
Identity of a person ( even his biometric information)
can be known easily if the passport is
opened/partially opened too…
SCOPE
In forthcoming years there will be development on an active RFID
that will incorporate high functionality
The future enhancements of this technology would be contactless
payments .
The scope of RFID is to reduce its affects making the technology
more useful and successful.
Conclusion
RFID technology is going to influence the world
with its enormous range of applications as it
has been very impressive in its functionality.
RFID not only saves money, if used
properly it can save life and time,
which is precious.
