Seatwork No.6: Aaron Enrique M. Magsino ME-5301

The document contains solutions to two problems involving mechanical forces: 1) A rectangular key was used in a pulley connected to a line shaft. Given properties of the system including power, RPM, shear strength, key dimensions, the force on the key was calculated to be 45 kN. 2) The power required to shear a plate of given thickness and material properties over a period of time was used to calculate the width needed such that the plate would shear. The calculated width was 9.52 mm.

SEATWORK NO.

AARON ENRIQUE M. MAGSINO

ME-5301
PROBLEM NO.10: A rectangular key was used in a pulley connected to a line shaft at
15KW and 600rpm. If shearing of key is 230 MPa, determine the force acting on key
length if key width is one-fourth of shaft diameter and key length of 1inch.

•
Given: P or Power transmitted – 15KW
N – 600rpm
τ- 230MPa
w-d
l – 1inch

Required: F or Force acting on the key

Diagram:
•
Solution:
Using the empirical formula for shaft power
P=
=
D=
D= 1.214837868in
Use the value of D to solve for w

τ=
F = τ wl
= (230xPa)(x 0.0254m)(0.0254m)
= 45066.47595 N

Therefore the Force acting on the key is 45.066 KN or 45KN

PROBLEM NO.10: The power required to shear a plate 50mm thick for 10sec is 5KW. If the
ultimate strength of plate materials is 420 MPa, how wide shold the plate be?

Given: P or Power – 5KW

T or thickness – 50mm
t or time – 10s
Su or Ultimate Strength- 420 Mpa

Required: w or width

Diagram:
•
Solution:
Use the formula for Energy required to punch a hole
E=SuAt eq.1
E=Pt
= (5KW)(10s)
= 50KJ
Substitute the value of energy to eq.1 to solve for the Area
50KJ= (420xA(50mmx )
A= 4.7619047x
Since the Force is in Shear the area will be width x thickness of the plate
A= wt
4.7619047x = w (.05m)
w = 0.095233809524 m or 9.5233809524mm

Therefore the plate is 9.5233809524mm wide
