Flow Sensor

A paddle wheel flow sensor measures the flow rate of liquids and gases by counting the revolutions of an integrated paddle wheel. As fluid passes through the sensor, the paddle wheel spins and magnets attached to it generate pulses that are converted to a flow rate measurement. Common types include turbine and axis-flow designs. Paddle wheel sensors are cost-effective and provide real-time flow readings on an LCD display. They work by relating the number of paddle wheel revolutions directly to the flow rate passing through the sensor.

Flow Sensor

What Is Flow Sensor?

• Measure a flow rate of Fluid
• Measure the amount of liquid, gas or vapor that
passes through them
• Part of a flow meter that would help to measure
the flow rate
• Consists of a primary device, transducer and
transmitter
• Many types of Flow Sensor. Such as-Turbine Flow
Sensor, Electromagnetic Flow Sensor, Thermal
Mass Flow Sensor, Vertex Flow Sensor etc.
Paddle Wheel Flow Sensor
• Classified as a turbine flow meter
- Cost Effective Option
- It has an integral LCD display
- Indicates the flow rate
- Total consumption of fluid pass through the flow
meter
• Two mechanical classes as described below:
(1) Tangential-flow paddle wheel flow meters,
with a water wheel structure
(2) Axis-flow paddle wheel flow meters, with a
windmill structure
Operation of Flow Sensor
• The flow and the revolutions of the paddle
wheel are proportional to each other
• By spinning the paddle wheel with the force
from the flowing fluid, it becomes possible to
measure the rate of this flow from the number
of revolutions
• Magnet in the rotation axis and on the edge of
the paddle, extract pulses as signals
• Thus, converts the number of revolutions into
the flow rate
• Flow Calculation Methods:
Flow per single pulse × amount of pulses ÷ time =
instantaneous flow
