The Spouse
By Luis Dato
Rose in her hand, and moist eyes young with
weeping,
She stands upon the threshold of her house,
Fragrant with scent that wakens love from sleeping,
She looks far down to where her husband plows,
Her hair dishevelled in the night of passion,
Her warm limbs humid with the sacred strife,
What may she know but man and woman fashion
Out of the clay of wrath and sorrow- life?
She holds no joys beyond the days tomorrow,
She finds no worlds beyond her love’s embrace;
She looks upon the Form behind the furrow,
Who is her Mind, her Motion, Time and Space.
O somber mystery of eyes unspeaking,
O dark enigma of Life’s love forlorn;
The Sphinx beside the river smiles with the
seeking
The secret answer since the world was born.

after she woke up from the night of passion
while looking down to the field where her
husband is working really hard for the
family.

The wife’s hair was messy because from the night of
passion because her husband forced her to do it. Even
though she know what is the responsibility of every wife
to her husband, she is still in anger. She is asking here if
is this the life of being a married person?
3rd stanza
In this stanza, the woman is not happy anymore with her
life. She feels that she is being prisoned. She is obliged
to perform the act of loving under whatever

as her life(mind), strength(motion), her only joy(time)
and everything(space).

Conclusion
The spouse is a kind of poem that deals with the
situation of a married couple in reality. There
are many struggles that the wife and the
husband is facing during this time. It is also the
time where you will know the true attitude of
your partner because when you are still in an
intimate relationship, you will not see it unless
you get married.
