Extradosed Bridge Overview

This document provides an overview of extradosed bridges. It begins by explaining that extradosed bridges combine elements of cable-stayed and box girder bridges, having shorter towers than cable-stayed bridges and shallower girders than box girder bridges. It then discusses the characteristics and disadvantages of cable-stayed and box girder bridges. The document proceeds to describe the structural concept, construction process, advantages, and types of extradosed bridges. It concludes by noting that extradosed bridges offer a lower-cost alternative to cable-stayed bridges for medium span lengths.

3
INTRODUCTION
 Structure that combines main elements of
Prestressed box girder bridge and Cable-Stayed
bridge.
 Resembles similar to Cable-Stayed Bridge.
 Difference lies in tower height and depth of girder.
 Bridge was introduced by J MATHIVAT in 1988.

4
CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE
 It has one or more tower (or pylons).
 From which cables support the bridge deck.
 Distinctive feature are stays, which run directly
from tower to deck.
 Normally forming a fan-like pattern or a series
of parallel lines.

5
DISADVANTAGES OF CABLE-STAYED BRIDGE

 Only advantageous for short or medium distance

needs.
 Unable design in certain environments.
 Challenging to inspect and repair
 It has a maximum length.
 It can be susceptible to corrosion.

6
BOX GIRDE BRIDGE
 Main beams comprise girder in the shape
of a hollow box.
 Box is rectangular or trapezoidal in cross-
section.
 Box Girder normally comprises either prestressed
concrete, structural steel, or a composite of
steel and reinforced concrete.

7
DISADVANTAGES OF BOX GIRDER BRIDGE

 Greater design input.

 Handling during fabrication and coating
is very difficult.
 Risks associated with working in enclosed
spaces

9
EXTRADOSED BRIDGE
 Concept is relatively new in field of structural
and Bridge engineering.
 Attractive structural type around the world.
 Its becomes unique type of structure for its
advantages over other bridges.
 Due to good results obtained, first bridge constructed
in JAPAN(1994).
 Historical context describes its origin, influence of
principal structural elements.

10
Contd…
 Basic structural concept is Cables anchored
with Box Girder increase the compressive
force of girder.
 Allows Box Girder to carry a huge load by work
together with a very long span and lower
tower height.
 An Extradosed Bridge uses much shorter stay-
tower than cable-stayed bridge.
 Significantly shallow deck structure than used
on the girder bridge.

11
Contd…
 Many of the construction costs of both cable-
stayed and box girder types, extradosed bridges
can deliver material savings to offset much of
this penalty.
 Material cost of bridge is inversely proportional
to cable distance when height of pylon is kept
constant.

GENERAL STRUCTURAL
CONSIDERATION
STAY CABLE
 Stay configuration - Single plane/Double plane.
 Stay layout – Fan shaped/Semi fan shaped/Harp
shaped
CENTRAL SUPPORTED SUPERSTRUCTURE
 Single cell with internal strut.
 Single cell spine Box Girder with external strut.
 Single cell spine Box Girder with internal struts along
with external struts.

14
Contd…

LATERALLY SUPPORTED SUPER STRUCTURE

 Single cell Box Girder.
 Multiple cell Box Girder.
PIER SUPER STRUCTURE CONNECTION
 Through bearings.
 Monolithics.

15
Contd…

PYLON AND PIER CONFIGURATION

 Single Pier.
 Twin bladed piers.

16
CONSTRUCTION
 Working part on the bending of girder and part on
the cable suspension of deck.
 Optimum design depends upon number of
parameters.
 During problem formulation, most of the practical
design variables are considered.
 Form is mostly suited to medium-length spans
between 100m to 250m.

17
Contd…

 Extradosed Cable stayed bridges are the large

and sophisticated structures which may greatly
benefits from use of structural optimization
techniques for preliminary design improvements.
 Structural optimization has become an important
tool.
 Since it allows a better exploitation of material,
thus decreasing structures self-weight and
saving material cost.
18
Contd…

 Typically constructed in balanced cantilever.

 Depth to span ratio ranging from 1:25 to 1:50.
 So depth to span ratio is kept 1:40 for all models.
 Spacing of main cables has critical influence not
only on the structural efficiency.

19
ADVANTAGES

STRUCTURAL: Similar to Girder Bridge

No vibration problem.
No fatigue problem.
AESTHETIC: Improved aesthetic
 Looks similar to cable stayed bridge.

20
Contd…

CONSTRUCTION: Ease in construction

Lesser tower height than cable
stayed bridge.
Simpler superstructure.
ECONOMICS:Less material consumption of
superstructure.

21
Contd…
Nearly 30% lesser than Girder Bridge.
Less load on foundation.
Saving in foundation.

32
CONCLUSION
 It can be adopted alternative to Cable- Stayed
Bridge , when overall height is restricted.
 Lower tower height not only reduces material
consumed but also reduces construction difficulty.
 From aesthetic consideration , Extradosed
Bridges creative yet more economically
affordable designs compared to Cable- Stayed
Bridge.

33
Contd…
 More competitive under similar span length
owing to lower construction cost.
 Better constructability and easier maintenance.
 Best suited for spans more than 100m.
 Previous studies identified 120 Extradosed Bridge
in use.
 State’s first Extradosed Bridge is being constructed
at Beypore.
