Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that states the best action is the one that maximizes utility or happiness and minimizes suffering. There are two main types: act utilitarianism, which says an act is morally right if it produces the most happiness, and rule utilitarianism, which says an action is right if it conforms to a rule that leads to the greatest good. Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill were influential utilitarian philosophers who argued actions should maximize pleasure and minimize pain, considering the interests of all beings equally.
