Statistics for Educators

Statistics is useful in education in several ways. It helps teachers accurately describe and evaluate student performance using data from tests and observations. Teachers can use statistics to summarize results concisely, make definite conclusions, predict future performance, and identify underlying factors influencing events. Statistics also plays an important role in educational research by guiding proper data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of results.

EDUCATION

 CONCEPT OF STATISTICS

 APPLICATION OF STATISTICS IN EDUCATION

 APPLICATION OF STATISTICS IN RESEARCH

 Definition:
The science of statistics is essentially a branch of
applied mathematics and can be regarded as a mathematics applied to
observation data –(R.A Fisher)

 Concept :
statistics is the branch of applied
mathematics which deal with the study of collection
,organization ,analysis , interpretation
and presentation of quantitative data
 Measurement and evaluation are essential elements of
teaching learning process
 In this process we obtained the scores and interpret these
scores in order to conclude the performance of students
 Statistics makes teacher capable to study these scores
objectively
 Hence, statistics makes teaching learning process
more
efficient and effective
 It helps teacher to provide the most exact
type of description :
when we want to know about the pupil we administer a test or
observe the child then from the result we describe about the pupil’s
performance or trait .statistics helps the teacher to give an accurate
description of the data
EXAMPLE: A math’s teacher conduct a test of 10 marks
following
are the obtained marks by the students
2,3,4,4,4,5,5,8,8,9
Description of data are
9=best performance (as it is highest score obtained)
2=worst performance (lowest obtained
score) 5.2=average performance of the class
(mean)
 It makes the teacher definite and exact in
procedures and thinking :

sometimes due to lack of technical knowledge the teachers

become vague in describing the student’s performance in certain
situation field of statistics enables him to describe performance by
using proper language and symbols which makes the interpretation
definite and exact.
Above pie chart interpret attendance record of students among
different subjects according to this highest attendance has been
recorded in economics and lowest attendance is in physics hence it
may depend upon interest of students in subject
It enables the teacher to summarize
the results in a meaningful and
convenient form :

Statistics gives order to the data.

It helps the teacher to make the data precise and meaningful
and to express it in an understandable and interpretable
manner

EXAMPLE :
O,1,1,2,2,2,3,4,5,6
SUMMARY :
MEAN =
2.6
MEDIAN =
2
MODE = 2
RANGE
= 6
 It enables teacher to draw general conclusions :
statistics helps teacher to draw general conclusion as well as
extracting conclusions .statistics steps also help to say about how much
faith should be placed in any conclusion and about how far we may
extend our generalization

 It helps the teacher to predict the future

performance of the pupils
statistics enables the teacher to predict how much of a thing will
happen under conditions we know and have measured
EXAMPLES:
The teacher can predict the probable score of a student in the final
examination from his entrance test score .but the prediction may be
erroneous due to different factors.
statistical methods tell about how much margin of error to allow in
making predictions
 Statistics enables the teacher to analyse some of the
causal factors underlying complex and otherwise
Be- wildering events :
it is a common factor that the behavioural outcome is a resultant of
numerous causal factors . the reason behind the poor performance of the
students in a particular subject are varied and many . So with the
appropriate statistical methods we can keep this extraneous variables
constant and can observe the cause of failure of the pupil in a particular
subject
EXAMPLE :
Students of class ninth obtained overall very lowest result in chemistry
subject by the help of statistics teacher become capable to find out the
reason
behind this poor performance that is lack of understanding as well as
chemistry teacher become failure to build interest in chemistry subject
 Statistics play a vital role in research . For example statistics
can used as in data collection ,analysis ,interpretation ,
explanation and presentation .Use of statistics will guide
researchers in research for proper characterization ,
summarization presentation and interpretation of the result
of research.
 It is important for researchers and also consumers of
research to understand statistics so that they can be informed
, evaluate the credibility and usefulness of information , and
make appropriate decisions.
