A Seminar On: Scada

This document summarizes a seminar presentation on SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. It defines SCADA as a system that collects data from sensors at remote locations and sends this data to a central computer for management and control. It describes the typical architecture and components of a SCADA system, including human-machine interfaces, transducers, master terminal units, remote terminal units, and communication infrastructure. It also discusses the aims, functions, and applications of SCADA systems, including their use in power distribution in India.

WHAT IS SCADA
• SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And
Data Acquisition.
• SCADA refers to a system that collects data
from various sensors at a factory, plant or in
other remote locations and then sends this
data to a central computer which then
manages and controls the data.
AIM OF SCADA SYSTEM

• Power System Visualization

• Tools for Efficient Grid Operation
• Guiding Control Engineers at Regional, State and Sub-
Load Dispatch Centres on real time

• Post Operation or Historical Analysis

• Future Planning.
SCADA ARCHITECTURE

• First generation: Monolithic

• Second generation: Distributed

• Third generation: Networked

FUNCTIONS OF SCADA
• DATA ACQUISITION.
• CONTROL
• PROCESSING OF ACQUIRED DATA.
• DATA EXCHANGE
• LIMIT / STATUS MONITORING & ALARMING.
• TAGGING
• LOGGING
• INFORMATION STORAGE & RETRIEVAL.
SCADA Operation classified into three parts
1. INPUT
• ANALOG : Continuous Electrical Signals
Ex.Active Power (MW), Reactive
Power(MVAR), Voltage (KV), Frequency
(Hz).etc..
• DIGITAL : Switching Signals High(1) or
Low(0) Signal Ex.Breaker Close(high) or
Open(low), Isolator Closed(high) or
Open(low).
 PROCESS
o The signals are converted into digital format
Implement protocol between Master and Slave.
o It operates with Real Time Operating System
(RTO) .

 OUTPUT
o The results are exposed with user friendly
environment.
o Through displays can be possible.
o To control the substation and generating station.
SCADA AS A SYSTEM
TYPICAL SCADA SYSTEM
System components:

• Human-Machine interface (HMI)

o presents data to a human operator.
o Helps human operator to monitor and control the process.

• TRANSDUCER
o Current Transducers.
o Voltage Transducers.
o Power Transducers.
Master Terminal Unit(MTU) :
• Heart of the system
• Initiates communication, store information ,gather
data and interface with operators

Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) :

• scan the data from external connected device.
• connects to sensors in the process.
• converting sensor signals to digital data.
• sending digital data to the supervisory system.
Programmable Logic Controller (PLCs):
• used as field devices because they are more
economical, versatile, flexible, and
configurable than special-purpose RTUs.

Communication infrastructure:
• connects the supervisory system to the
Remote Terminal Units
Video Project Display (VPD)

• It is giant screen for visualizing Substation

Single Line Diagrams, System Demand
Particulars, and Inter state Drawls from
long Distance.

• The picture was export on it from one of

the local work station.

• It is control by Window based PC.

USE OF SCADA IN INDIAN POWER DISTRIBUTION
FEATURES OF SCADA
REAL TIME AND HISTORICAL TREND
• plays very important role in the process
operation.
• If batch fails or the plant trips, the historical
trend data analyzed.
• Gives better look of the parameters through
the trend.
• ALARMS
o have a very critical role in automation.
o Generally we have alarm states for each
inputs/outputs.

• RECIPE MANAGEMENT
o When different products to manufacture load
the recipe of the particular product
• SECURITY
can allocate certain facilities or features to the
operator, process people, engineering dept
and maintenance dept.

• DEVICE CONNECTIVITY
SCADA software should have connectivity to
the different hardware used in automation
Power System Model semantic
Element
APPLICATION PROGRAMS
• Fault location, isolation and Service Restoration
• Maintaining good voltage profile
• Load Balancing
• Load Control
• Remote metering
• Energy accounting
CONCLUSION
• It can reliably monitor and control a process
without requiring an operator’s supervision
• It allow to count, totalize, trend, data log and
calculate valuable information about your
process.
• Helps to save money on, man-hours,
maintenance, electric power and natural
resources.
