EVALUATING
Function
General Mathematics
Welcome to my
class.
Objectives
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. recall the process of substitution;
2. identify the various types of functions; and
3. evaluate functions.
REVIEW TIME!
Given the following expressions, find its value if x = 3.
1. =(3) = -6
2. == 9+7 = 16
3. =
= 9 + 12 – 10 = 11

EVALUATING FUNCTIONS
is the process of determining the value of the
function at the number assigned to a given variable. Just like
in evaluating algebraic
expressions, you just need to:
a.) replace each letter in the expression with the
assigned value and
b.) perform the correct order of operations in the expression.
Example 1: Given f (x) = 2x − 4 , find the value of the
function if x = 3.
SOLUTION:
f(3) = 2(3)-4 Substitute x by 3 in the function.
f(3) = 6-4 Simplify the expression on the
right side of the equation.
f(3) = 2
Answer: Given f (x) = 2x − 4 , f (3) = 2
Example 2: Given , find g(−3) .
SOLUTION:
Substitute x by -3 in the function.
Simplify the expression on the
right side of the equation.
Answer: Given , g(−3) = 34.
Example 3: Given , find p(0) and p(-1) .
SOLUTION:
Treat each of these like two
separate problems. In each
p case, substitute x by its given
value and simplify. Start with
p(𝑥) = 0,
p
then p(x) = −1.
p
Answer: Given, p(0) = -2.
Example 3: Given , find p(0) and p(-1) .
SOLUTION:
Substitute x by -1 in the
function.
p
Simplify the expression on
the right side of the
p
equation.
p
Answer: Given, p(-1) = -4.
Example 4: Given
SOLUTION:
f(h+1) = 5(h+1) + 1 This time, substitute x by (h+1)
f(h+1) = 5h + 5 + 1 Use the distributive property
on the right side, then combine like
f(h+1) = 5h + 6 terms to simplify.
Answer: Given , f(h+1) = 5h+6
Example 5: Given
SOLUTION:
Substitute 9 for x in the function.
Simplify the expression on the
right side of the equation
Answer: Given
Example 6: Given
SOLUTION:
Substitute -5 for x in the function.
Simplify the expression on the right side
of the equation. (recall the concepts of
integers and the process on how to
simplify fractions).
Answer: Given
Example 7: Evaluate f
SOLUTION:
Substitute for x in the function.
Simplify the expression on the right
side of the equation. (get the cube of 2
which is 8, then simplify)
Answer: Given
Example 8: Evaluate the function f (x) = where means the absolute
value of x − 8 if x = 3 .
SOLUTION:
Substitute 3 for x in the function.
Simplify the expression on the right
side of the equation. (Remember that
any number in the absolute value
sign is always positive)
Answer: Given f (x) = , f (3) = 5
Example 9: Evaluate the function f(2x − 3).
SOLUTION:
