IELTS SPEAKING

PART 3 – Ence Adinda

IELTS SPEAKING PART 3
OVERVIEW
• 4-5 minute conversation

• Questions are less-personal/ abstract topic

e.g: Do you think that social media is important?

• Related to part 2
• More flexible, examiner can take in/out questions based on
their needs
• Strong candidates might get challenging questions
DO remember …
• Part 3 is less about you.
• It requires you to talk about the general view
• Try to expand your answer for 40-50 seconds
• There is no right or wrong answer in IELTS speaking
Types of question
• Opinion : Do you think recycling is important?

Tips:
- start with the general view

- put a conclusion as a link back

Model Answer (if you are familiar with the topic):

Well, that’s a bit tough. People from all around the world are extremely concerned with
how climate change issues have threatened their lives. It’s one point to highlight that
recycling is commonly known as one of the most efficient ways that everyone can do to
slow down the negative impact of climate change. Also, I think recycling can be done by
everyone at their homes. It’s very actionable. As simple as sorting out our organic and
inorganic waste, then use the composting bins and just put all organic waste in that bin.
On the whole, by and large, I think recycling it’s important.
Types of question
• Opinion : Do you think recycling is important?
Tips:
- Focus on producing the language even though you have limited knowledge about the topic
- Use excuses as the answer
- Say something very general about the topic

Model Answer 2 ( if the topic is less-familiar):

Well, that’s a bit tough question as I don’t really follow this topic and I can’t really tell you
specifically why it’s important or not. Uhm.. probably this is not the best answer that people
can give you about this topic. Well, to my very basic knowledge about this, I think that’s a good
thing when people start to sort out their waste, at least to divide it into organic and inorganic
waste. I think recycling is just one of the many good movements out there to save our earth
from destruction and extinction. Yeah, so I do think recycling it’s important.
• Comparison : Do men and women think differently about having a kid?
Tips:
- Use double perspective
- Compare and contrast ( example: men VS women)
- Give examples

Model answer:
That’s kind of tricky question. If we talk about how men and women think by nature. How their
brain function might differ from one to another. For example, women’s brain is known for its
excellence when it comes to languages. Women seem to be the expert of explaining things.
They don’t have trouble giving reasons. While, in fact, men’s brain are more practical. Now,
when we talk about having a kid. Most likely women will produce tons of reason why they
should have or should not have a kid while men would most likely to stick only on the practical
things. For example, they will not have a kid unless they have a stable job, and that only.
• Comparison : Do men and women think differently about
having a kid?

reason VS practicality
emotional VS logical
mental stability VS financial stability
• Prediction : Will it be possible to prevent new viruses from spreading?

Tip :
- Use if clause/ conditional sentence
- Use future tense/ future continuous

Model answer:

Uhm… yeah we’re right in the middle of pandemic right know and we don’t know yet when

this will stop. We surely don’t want any other new viruses spreading and creating another

chaos in future. If there were any technology or breakthrough that can be used to predict

or to stop the viruses from spreading, that will surely be useful and will save many lives. If

I were the government, I will be focusing and investing more on health technology to

make sure that we will be able to tackle other crisis that will occur in the future.
FAQ:
• What if I don’t know anything about the topic?

• What if I don’t get the question?

• What if the examiner interrupts me?

• Can I correct myself?

• Can I use idioms?

• Can I use fillers?
