Objective
In order to educate about Indian culture.
I have selected a certain topic related to
Manipur and Nagaland and the sports related to the
locality.
Sports in Manipur
Mukna : Matches begin with the competitors
holding each other's belts called ningri. The
object is to pin the opponent with their back
touching the ground. The winner is called
a yatra. Mukna contains many techniques (lou)
which require absolute physical fitness and skill
to be mastered. Holding the opponent's neck,
hair, ear, or legs with the hands is not permitted.
Any strikes are also considered fouls. Anyone
who touches the ground with any part of their
body besides the feet is declared the loser.
Mukna Kangjei:
Khong kangjei, also known as mukna kangjei or
sometimes kanjei, and commonly known as foot
hockey, Manipuri hockey or hockey on foot, is a
sport similar to field hockey primarily of
the state of Manipur in India. It is a game which
requires stamina, speed, and agility, and is one of
the most popular games in Manipur.
It is one of the indigenous sports of Manipur,
others being sangol kanjei and kang, each of
which reflects the martial tradition of
Manipur, and with mukna captures an ethical
code important to the culture of Manipur
Polo(Manipur) : India is the birthplace of
modern Polo. The modern game of polo is derived
from Manipur, where the game was known as 'Sagol
Kangjei', 'Kanjai-bazee', or 'Pulu'. It was the
anglicised form of the last, referring to the wooden
ball that was used, which was adopted by the sport in
its slow spread to the west.
Arambia Hunba:
People of Manipur are very fond of riding horses
specially those who are in the village near the
breeding areas. Since the ponies are easily
available, the young boys get the chance of riding
ponies without saddle on horse back. Sometimes
they ride horse using a rope in place of regular
bridle throwing branches of small trees in place
of Arambai.
This practice helped the Manipur Arambai force as a
martial art which was very much required during the
advance and withdrawal of forces. This art was very
popular as an indigenous game of the youth of
Manipur. This game is displayed even now, during
the festival "Kwak Jatra" after Durga poja.
Cock fighting is popular in northeastern states of India like
Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. Nagaland is the
land of cock fighters. This sport in Nagaland and other
northeastern states consists of kicking solely with the legs of
the roosters. It is quite similar with Tae-Kwan-Do. In
Nagaland, tourists also enjoy the cock fighting and now it is
the part of tourism promotion.
Sports in Nagaland
Kene or Naga wrestling is a folk wrestling style
and traditional sport of the Nagas. It is closely
related to , the traditional national sport of Korea.
The objective of the sport is to bring any part of the
opponent's body above the knee to the ground.
Kene is played by the Tenyi–mi ethnic group of the
Nagas-
Angami, Chakhesang and Zeliangrong of Nagaland
& Mao, Maram and Poumai of Manipur.
Each wrestler wears a coloured cloth tied around
the waist. Holding the opponent's waist-binder
with both hands, the wrestler must attempt to
topple the other onto the ground.
