Presentation 1

This document provides an overview of an anti-lock braking system (ABS) presentation. It defines ABS and its purpose to maintain vehicle control and stability during hard braking. It describes the basic components and operation of ABS, including wheel speed sensors, ABS control module, hydraulic modulator, pump motor and accumulator. It also outlines the disadvantages of ABS in some circumstances like increased braking distances on loose surfaces.

INTRODUCTION
 ‡An anti-lock braking system (ABS)  is a
 safetysystem
 on motor vehicles which prevents thewheels from locking

while braking.‡The Anti-lock Braking System is designed

tomaintain
 vehicle control, directionalstability and optimum

deceleration
 under severe braking conditions on most roadsurfaces. ‡ It

does so by monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel

and controlling the brake linepressure to each wheel
during braking. This
 prevents the wheels from locking up.
THEORY OF ABS
When the car brakes (normally ) wheels exert a
forward force on the street which less than
maximum static sliding friction

‡ If the driver brakes very  hard it can occur thatthe

maximum static friction is surpassed and thewheels lose
their grip and begin sliding.‡The amount of traction which
can be obtained for an auto tire is determined by the
coefficient of static friction between the tire and the road.
If the wheel is locked and sliding, the force of friction is
determined by the coefficient of kineticfriction.
But in gravel, sand and deep snow,
lockedwheels dig in and stop the vehicle
morequickly. A locked tire allows a small
wedgeof snow to build up ahead of it
which allowsit to stop in a somewhat
shorter distancethan a rolling tire.
‡ When  tire does not slip, it will roll only
inthe direction it turns. But once itskids,
regardless of the angle of the frontwheels,
the vehicle continues to skid in
Basic operation
ANTI-LOCK are design to maintain vehicle
stability and optimum deceleration

roadsurfaces .‡It does so by monitoring the

rotational speedof each wheel and controlling

 HydraulicModulator ‡
 Pump Motor &Accumulator
ABS CONTROL MODULE
 The ABS control module isa microprocessor and
uses input from its sensors to regulatehydraulic
pressure during braking to preventwheel
lockup.
 ‡ The key inputs are wheel speed sensors and
abrake pedal switch. The switch signals the
controlmodule when the brakes are being
applied.‡ When ABS braking isneeded, the
controlmodule kicks intoaction and orders
thehydraulic unit tomodulate brakepressure as
needed

DISADVANTAGES
 Increased braking distances
 under some limited circumstances(snow, gravel,
"soft" surfaces).‡Creation of a
 "false sense of security"among drivers who do
not understand theoperation, and limitations of
ABS.
 ‡The anti-lock brakes are more sensitive on
thedamper condition. the influence of the
worncomponents on theperformance of the
vehicle with anti-lock brakes is more significant
than with abs
