Evolution of Early Calculators

The document summarizes the history of early calculating devices, including the abacus, Napier's bones, the Pascaline calculator, Babbage's difference engine, Boolean logic, and Hollerith's tabulating machine. These inventions ranged from the earliest abacus used to calculate, to Boolean logic which formed the basis of computer circuitry, to Hollerith's punched card tabulating machine used to help automate census data processing.

FIRST COMPUTER - ABACUS
 The earliest known calculating device is
probably the abacus. It dates back at least
to 1100 bce and is still in use today, particularly
in Asia. Now, as then, it typically consists of a
rectangular frame with thin parallel rods
strung with beads.
NAPIER’S BONES
 Napier's bones is a manually-operated
calculating device created by John Napier of
Merchiston, Scotland for the calculation of
products and quotients of numbers. The
method was based on lattice multiplication,
and also called 'rabdology', a word invented by
Napier. Napier published his version in 1617.
PASCALINE
 Pascal's calculator is a mechanical calculator
invented by Blaise Pascal in 1642. Pascal was
led to develop a calculator by the laborious
arithmetical calculations required by his
father's work as the supervisor of taxes in
Rouen.
DIFFERNCE ENGINE
 A difference engine is an automatic mechanical
calculator designed to tabulate polynomial
functions. It was designed in the 1820s, and
was first created by Charles Babbage.
BOOLEAN LOGIC
 GEORGE BOOLE DEVELOPED BOOLEAN
LOGIC WHICH WOULD LATER BE USED IN
THE DESIGN OF COMPUTER CIRCUITRY.
Boolean logic is a form of algebra where all
values are either True or False.
HOLLERITH’S TABULATOR
 The tabulating machine was an
electromechanical machine designed to assist
in summarizing information stored on punched
cards. Invented by Herman Hollerith, the
machine was developed to help process data
for the 1890 U.S. Census.
