What is the Global Communications Suite?
• GCS provides for a ‘connected aircraft’ by
connecting the passengers on the aircraft to
the ground.

What is eXConnect?
• eXConnect allows passengers to connect
their laptops, tablets, i-Pads and similar
devices to land-based Internet networks
through an onboard Wireless Network.

Wi-Fi
• The same onboard wireless network that
provides for access to the Internet also
provides passengers access audio and video
media that is stored on the wireless network
servers.

• This Line Maintenance Course provides
insights on the components and their
functions that allow passengers to connect to
the wireless network and to the Internet using
eXConnect.
• This course is designed to provide students
an understanding of the GCS systems that
will serve as a foundation for the diagnosis
and repair of the eXConnect system.

GCS Line Maintenance Training
Overview

Course Level
• Panasonic Line Maintenance Training provides
students with the level of understanding
necessary to maintain and diagnose the
Panasonic IFE and GCS systems.
• Specific removal and replacement procedures
for the system LRUs are not covered in the
Line Maintenance training classes. The Airline
Maintenance Manual (AMM) is the only
authorized document for repair procedures.

System Overview—Features
Panasonic offers passengers access to inflight Internet connectivity and to
stored media through an onboard wireless network.
The eXConnect system provides access to the ground-based Internet.

eXConnect
•Panasonic Avionics Corporations eXConnect system provides Broadband
Internet connectivity services to passengers using satellite communications
technologies. Passenger access is through an onboard wireless network.

The Three Segments of eXConnect
Systems: Space-Air-Ground Segments
• eXConnect uses three segments to provide broadband connectivity
– Space Segment (Ku-band satellite communications) that links the
aircraft to the ground.
– Air Segment (system components on the aircraft) that provide
interface between passenger and the satellite.
– Ground Segment (receives the satellite signals and provides the
link to the Internet through a gateway).

System Overview
• Latest Satellite Communications Technology
– Ku-band satellites operate at a frequency between 12-18
GHz, and provide more bandwidth at a lower cost
– Ku-Band is a low signal strength technology that is used
to move large amounts of data over great distances.

eXConnect Purpose
• The primary purpose of eXConnect is to provide passengers
with a real-time link to ground-based networks.
• The same wireless network provides access to media and
content that is stored locally onboard the aircraft.

Availability
• Wireless Internet services will be available in unrestricted
areas when the aircraft is above 10,000 feet absolute current
terrain level (+500 feet on initial connection)

Crew Terminal
• The Crew Terminal provides access to the
CMI (Cabin Management Interface) screens.
• Crew members will use the screens to view
the status of the GCS systems.
