 What is green computing
 History of green computing
 System architecture
 Approaches to green computing
 Objectives of green computing
 Applications of green computing
 Examples of green computing
 Advantages and disadvantages
 Conclusion
WHAT IS GREEN
COMPUTING?
Green computing is the practice of using
computing resources efficiently.

Designing , manufacturing , and disposing

computer , servers with no impact on the
environment.

To reduce the use of Hazardous materials,

maximize energy efficiency during
product’s lifetime.
HISTORY OF GREEN COMPUTING
 The term Green Computing came into existence with the launch of energy star
program in 1992.

 ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the environmental protection Agency

(EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) of USA.

 It aims towards electricity saving and less amount of heat generated by the
computers.

 Widespread use of computers and related IT products has a very bad effect on
the environment.

DESIGN MANUFACTURING USING DISPOSING OFF

GREEN PRODUCTS
APPROACHES TO GREEN COMPUTING
 Product longevity
 Data center design
 Software and deployment optimization
 Power management
 Telecommuting
OBJECTIVES OF GREEN COMPUTING
 To minimize the use of computing products.
 To make the computing process energy
efficiency.
 Reducing travel requirements.
 Recycling of computing wastage product.
 Save money due to reduced utility cost.
 Reducing the use of papers.
APPLICATIONS
 Connected heating and lighting
 Electric vehicles
 Data centers
 Alternative energy
 Recycling devices
EXAMPLES OF
GREEN COMPUTING
 Purchasing from Environmentally
Committed Companies

 Participating in Electronic Recycling

Programs.

 Deploying virtual technologies.

 Limiting Printing, Recycling paper and

Reducing E-waste.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF IT SYSTEM
Carbon trading applications: with potential carbon trading on cards, these
organizational applications will also be geared toward performing analytics on the
real time data that will enable the organization to figure out trends in its own carbon
performance as well as that of the market. Carbon reporting tools will play equally
significant role in the carbon economy.

Design, Development, and use of power efficiency in IT and Non-IT Hardware:

This would include not only power efficiency in electronic chip designs, but also
expansion into green power grids and management of equipment through software
and operating systems.

Recycling and Disposal of IT Hardware : This will impact the procurement as well
as disposal aspect of IT that is associated with efficient design of equipment, as well
as ethical disposal of the same when their use is consummated.
SPECIFIC AREAS OF IT SYSTEM
Software applications and packages: These are the existing ERP/CRM applications
within the organization that need to undergo a major revamp to incorporate green
factors. The carbon data form within the organizations are measured through various
means such as smart meters, are inputted directly by users or updated through
interfaces from other systems. Carbon usage data are then fed into the financial type
calculators of the organization to ascertain the corresponding carbon calculations.
Emerging Cloud Technologies: Computing is becoming increasingly decentralized
and having a dedicated data center is no longer the privilege that it used to be. A
cloud essentially enables sharing of large scale storage of data, corresponding
computation, and analysis and reduces overall carbon.
ADVANTAGES
 Reduced energy consumption.
 Maintaining green environment.
 Cost-effective computing.
 Conservation of resources.
DISADVANTAGES
 Rapid change in technology.
 Initial implementation may be costly.
 Requires care from user.
 Requires deep understanding of green computing concept
LIMITATIONS
 Green Computing could be quite costly.
 Some computers that are green may be considerably underpowered.
 Rapid technology change.
CONCLUSION
 Consumers haven't cared about ecological impact when buying computers,
they've cared only about speed and price.
 Devices use less and less power while renewable energy gets more and more
portable and effective.
 New green materials are developed every year, and many toxic ones are
already being replaced by them.
