PEMDAS

The document discusses the order of operations (PEMDAS/BODMAS) which is the standard order that mathematical expressions involving multiple operations should be evaluated. It explains that parentheses, exponents, multiplication/division (from left to right), and addition/subtraction (from left to right) should be performed in that sequence. Examples are provided to demonstrate how to use the order of operations to simplify expressions involving multiple operations.

ORDER

OF OPERATIONS
Prepared by
GLENDA P. DAPROZA, T1
REAH S. BELLOSA, T1
Often you will have to evaluate expressions that
have more than one operation on them. For
example, how would you evaluate You might
proceed in one of two ways. Only one is correct.

Add 8 and 2. Multiply 2 and 4.

Multiply by 4. Add 8.
ORDER OF OPERATIONS

1. Compute inside parentheses first.

2. Evaluate all exponents.
3. Multiply and divide, working from left
to right.
4. Add and subtract, working from left to
right.

To simplify an expression means to
replace the expression with the simplest
value.

4 + 15 ÷ 3 Divide first

4+5 Then add

PEMDAS
3+2 - (9+1)

= 3(10)+6 2

= 3(10)+36
= 30+36
= 66
