HYPERSPECTRAL INSTRUMENTS
Remote Sensing:
Remote sensing is the non-contact recording of information from the
ultraviolet, visible, infrared and microwaves regions of the electromagnetic
spectrum by means of instruments such as, cameras, scanners and lasers
located on platforms such aircraft spacecraft and the analysis of acquired
information by means of visible and digital image processing.
Hyperspectral Imaging
Which is currently coming into its own as a
powerful and versatile means for continuous
sampling of narrow intervals of the spectrum.
Because of the high speeds of air and space
vehicle motion, there was not sufficient time
for a spectrometer to dwell on a small area
of the earth surface or an atmospheric target
MSS Sensors
Ikonos
It is an panchromatic multispectral and satellite borne scanner. It is the
first commercial high resolution satellite, launched by USA in
september 1999. It will have one band panchromatic sensors ranges
from 0.45 to 0.9µm with 1m spatial resolution and multispectral
scanner with 4m resolution. Repeats cycle in approximately 11 days
ASTER (Advanced Space borne thermal emission and reflection
radiometer)
launched by NASA in 1989
Multispectral scanner
It will have 3 band, 6 band and 5 bands
Swath width is 60km
Revisits in 16 days
AVIRIS
Operated by NASA
It will have 224 bands
Ranges from 0.40-2.50µm
Used in ecology, oceanography, geology,
snow hydrology, cloud and atmospheric
studies
CASI (Compact airborne spectrographic imager)
It is multispectral
Wavelength 2 to 12nm
1km swath width
Used in geology, coastal zones, agriculture,
environmental monitoring
AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer)
Multispectral
Maintained by NASA
Band width is 0.58 to 12.50µm
Swath width is 2700km
Used in vegetation distribution and
seasonal changes on continent scale
Conclusion
From the studies of hyperspectral
instrument we conclude that we can
view a particular area with a good
manner because of its high resolution
and its band width and swath width.
