Pumping Stations: Types and Functions

Pumping stations transfer water for irrigation, drainage, drinking water supply, industry, and sewage systems. They belong to hydropower facilities. Pumping stations are divided into types according to their purpose and location, such as circulating pumping stations used in industry to circulate water for cooling or purification. Pumping station facilities must intake water reliably from the source, prevent debris and fish from entering, and allow for repair, cleaning, and emergency closure. Control questions review key concepts about pumping stations.

Pumping stations

Pumping stations belong to the type of hydropower

facilities and serve to transfer water in irrigation, drying,

household-drinking or industrial water supply, as well as

sewage (discharge of waste water) and other systems.

The structure and dimensions of the
hydraulic facilities of the pumping station are
determined in many cases depending on the
hydrological characteristics of the water
source and the natural condition of the place.
Pump station

1-water source; 2nd water intake facility; 3 water supply

channel; 4- advance camera; 5-water intake facility; 6th station
building; 7-pressure pipes; 8- water outlet; 9-pressure basin;
10th car channel; 11-power distribution devices
The requirements for pumping station
facilities are as follows:
- water intake facility - in unfavorable hydrological and hydraulic
conditions, it is necessary to receive the estimated water
consumption from the source, to ensure that the amount of turbidity,
floating objects, and ice fragments does not enter the facility, and to
prevent the entry of fish, to ensure the possibility of repairing,
cleaning, or closing the facility in emergency situations;
- the water supply facility is usually built in the form of an open
self-flowing channel, it is required to have low hydraulic resistance,
non-washable, non-sludgy, low water filtration properties.
The vane chamber is the expansion part at the
end of the water supply channel, which
smoothly connects it with the water intake
facility;

The water supply system is divided into the

first and second lifting, boosting and rotating
types according to the importance and location
of pumping stations.
Circulating pumping stations

Circulating (circulating) pumping stations are

included in the water supply system of industrial
enterprises and thermal power stations (HPS). At
these stations, one group of pumps sends the
produced water to the cooler or purification device,
while the second group of pumps sends the prepared
water back to the production device, that is, the
water is used in circulation.
Pumping stations used in agriculture serve for
irrigation, drying, sprinkler irrigation, water supply
systems for villages and pastures. Pumping stations that
receive water from an underground source are used for
the purpose of irrigation of small areas, lowering of the
underground water level, water discharge during
construction works, and population and industrial water
supply. It is appropriate to use mobile surface and
floating pumping stations in cases where stationary
pumping stations are not justified technically or
economically when taking water from open basins.
