Sequence and Series

Objectives:

illustrate and generate

pattern

differentiate series
from sequence

4
What is sequence?
A sequence is a succession of numbers in a specific order.

5
Each number in a sequence is called term.
The terms are formed according to some
fixed rule or property. They arranged as the
first term, the second term, the third term and
so on.

6
What is series?

A series is the indicated sum of the terms of a

sequence.

7
ACTIVITY

FIND THE NEXT THREE TERMS OF EACH SEQUENCE.

1. 3, 6, 9, 12, 15,18,21
2. 2, 9,16,23, 30,37,44
3. 9, 5, 1, -3, -7,-11,-15
4. 6, 9, 12,15, 18,21,24

9
Are we able to determine the first or last
term if the given is an infinite sequence?

A sequence with a definite

number of terms is a finite A sequence with no
sequence. In a finite definite number of terms
sequence, the first and the is an infinite sequence.
last term are clearly
identified. 11
The first and last terms of a sequence are referred to as extremes.
The terms between the first and the last term are called means.

Use the functional relation F(n) = 2n - 3, where n =1,2,3, and
4.

If n = 1 If n = 2 If n = 3 If n = 4
F(n) = 2n - 3 F(n) = 2n - 3 F(n) = 2n - 3 F(n) = 2n - 3

Use the functional relation F(n) = 3n - 2, where n =-1,-3,-5,
and -7.

If n = -1 If n = -3 If n = -5 If n = -7
F(n) = 3n - 2 F(n) = 3n - 2 F(n) = 3n - 2 F(-7) = 3n - 2

20
Sequences and Series play an important
role in various aspects of our lives. They
help us predict, evaluate and monitor the
outcome of a situation or event and help us
a lot in decision making.

21
Waiting time for bus
sequence can help you calculate the time you will have to wait before the
next bus arrives

22
In Making Pyramid-like Structures
A sequence helps you design pyramid-like structures where
the building components change in a constant manner. This is
such a simple and fun-filled application that you can try it
yourself using Legos.

23
Calculating the Price of an Object
Suppose you own a car that you purchased for some amount. If the price of the car depreciates (decreases) by same
percentage every year, you can find out the value of the car after n years, using the geometric sequence.

24
Compound Interest as Geometric Sequence
If you put your money in a bank and the bank provides you a fix annual
rate of interest, then you can calculate the amount you will have in your
account after certain years by using the concept of geometric
progression.

25
Seven days of creation:

in the beginning - God started creation

the first day - light was created
the second day - the sky was created
the third day - dry land, seas, plants and trees were created
the fourth day - the Sun, Moon and stars were created
the fifth day - creatures that live in the sea and creatures that fly were
created
the sixth day - animals that live on the land and finally humans, made in
the image of God were created
by day seven - God finished his work of creation and rested, making the
seventh day a special holy day.

The first and last terms of a sequence are

referred to as extremes.

29
