TIGWAHANON
• The term Tigwahanon may have been derived

inhabits its banks and watersheds.
• The Tigwahanon are scattered all over the
Municipality of San Fernando in Bukidnon
close to the border of Davao del Norte.
Geographical Location
• The Tigwahanon Manobo are found along the watershed of
Tigwa River in the place where the municipality of San
Fernando is located namely in the following places, Tugop,
Little Bagiou, Kumawas, Halapitan, Iglusad, Bunacao,
Katipunan, Kiboncog, Namnam, Matimbus, Sabangan,
Lumbayao, and Don Cesar plain; Kalagutay, Palacpacan,
Dao, Tag-alas-as and Abehid.

Family
• These people have tree houses called batangan built among
the branches of a growing tree with the tree trunk as its
solitary post. The catch and games in these communal food
getting are equally shared that even the unborn child in his
mother’s womb gets a share as long as the mother has done
her share of participation in the communal fishing and
hunting.
Marriage
• The practice of polygamy still exists
among the tribe. One can have as many as
13 wives. Each of the wives has her own
hut "payag "the size depends on the
number of children.
Life Cycle
• The giving of equal share to unborn child reflects
the esteem and value that these people gave to the
human person by making the unborn child have
equal rights with the adult human being.
Life Cycle
• The Bukidnon, Higaonon, Talaandig and the
Tigwahanon tribes have respondents aged 71-90.
This implies that these tribes have surpassed the
estimated lifespan of human beings as estimated by
the World Bank Organization (2012) which is 68.
Economic System
• Their fishing implements are bu-o (bamboo fish traps) in
varied forms they have learned to fish using hook and line
called banowit.
• The staples are rice during harvest time, occasional corn
grits are available and most of the year round they subsist
on camote (sweet potato) and other crops like cassava.
POLITICAL ORGANIZATION
• The datu are to maintain the customary laws
and social order in the community and
promote good relationships with other tribal
communities; and to arbitrate internal
conflicts.
Belief System
• RITUAL
Before a BANGKAKAWAN is held, a ritual is conducted
called SUNGGOD TA KAMANGA. The tribal people have a very
high respect on things specifically on the farm implements like
bolos, spears, arrows and the like. They are going to offer these
implements to their MAGBABAYA so that no harm will befall on
the people using those tools.
• RITUAL
A native chicken will be offered requesting the
spirits that nothing bad will befall on them as they
continue clearing the land. During this time many
people are invited to help clear the land.
Arts, Dresses and Personal adornment
Culture Change
• On the following day, the elders are going to open
the poison to be brought to the river and spread it
there killing all fishes in it. They are going to collect
and gather all the kasili caught and divide equally
among the people. Merriment ofthe people begins.
Culture Change
• Later on, this practice of poisoning the eels or
kasili was prohibited because it is very
dangerous to our environment.
