STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND
ANALYZE THE PROBLEM

This step aims to identify the specific impediments (obstacles)


that would be the focus for service delivery
 Important to know the community- to avoid events that may
impact negatively on the community’s social functioning
 Identify the problem with the community
 Identify the location of the problem and who is affected
STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND
ANALYZE THE PROBLEM

 What is the extend of the problem (how many people


affected and indirectly affected)
 What caused the problem
 How long has it been in existence
 Any reasons why it has not been dealt with
 Identify between a need and a want
 Does the community understand the problem

 The community’s felt need and real needs will not be


the same
 Decide on prioritizing the needs of the community
 Steer the community towards addressing urgent and
important needs

There are three categories of need

Normative need:
Occurs when there is a gap or deficiency between what is
desirable (ideal) and what actually exists
STEP 2: IDENTIFY AND
ANALYZE THE PROBLEM

Comparative need:
It compares to the characteristics of those who are receiving a
particular service or opportunity with those who do not

Felt or expressed need


Is the need felt or desired by the individual and might not be
important to everyone and does not reflect a real need of
the community
Do a feasibility study: readiness of the community to deal
with the impediments; availability of resources; the
impediments impact on the community and the workability of
the process
TASK – GROUP ACTIVITY

 The chief at Maungani village has approached your office to


assist with the elderly abuse that has become a norm in the
community.
 Based on the knowledge that you have acquired over the two
stages, demonstrate your understanding of the 2 steps in a group
presentation
