Yousef Nafi - Cutting Fluids

This document discusses cutting fluids, which are coolants and lubricants used in metalworking processes like machining. It defines cutting fluids and explains their main uses like cooling tools, lubrication, and decreasing friction. The document outlines the main types of cutting fluids and their properties. It also discusses factors to consider when selecting a cutting fluid, like the workpiece and tool materials. The advantages are increasing tool life and providing better surface finish, while the disadvantages include high costs and potential health and environmental issues. Cutting fluids are particularly important in machining processes involving high-speed steel tools.

type of coolant and lubricant designed specifically for metalworking processes, such
as machining and stamping.

Uses of Cutting Fluid
The cutting fluid or coolant used for various purposes, some of these are listed below:

1. Used to Cool the Tool

we can decrease the friction between the tool and the workpiece as also we can minimize
the heat during the cutting operation.
2. Used for Lubrication
it is used for lubricating purposes, the help cutting fluid chips can easily be removed from
the workpiece.
3. Used to Decrease Friction
Collant is used to decrease friction by doing this we can restrict the heat generation hence
less power is consumed that increases the tool life.
4. Restrict Thermal Distortion
By using cutting fluid we can restrict the change of
properties of the material because of heat.
5. Used as Cleaner
cutting fluid is used as a washing agent with the
help of cutting fluid we can clear the operation
area
4
Types of Cutting Fluid
We can categorize a cutting fluid into 4 types and those are:

• Soluble Oil is a mixture of water, mineral oil and coupling agents. Generally, we use
soap as a coupling agent.
• Cutting oil is a mixture of mineral oil and fatty oil. It is mainly used in hand cutting
machinery.
• Synthetic Coolants it contains zero mineral oil, it has a higher cooling rate.
• Solid Lubricants it is in the solid phase, soap bar, molybdenum disulfide, graphite, the
wax stick can be used as solid lubricants

5
Properties of Cutting Fluid
• • It is known for its High heat absorbing capacity
• It has significantly high flash point
• It is non corrosive to the equipment’s which are used such as the main tool and work
material
• Cutting fluid is usually harmless to operate and has no negative effect on the bearing
• It has extremely good lubrication properties which is helpful in decreasing the
frictional force and to reduce the power consumption.
• Cutting fluids have high specific heat, high heat conductivity, and high film coefficient

6
Selection of Cutting Fluids

1. It depends mainly on the material of the workpiece and the material of the tools used
in operation.

2. What kind of operation you are performing is also a major factor responsible for
deciding the cutting fluids.

3. Lastly, it depends on the cooling effect required in the machining operation.

7
The advantages of cutting fluids
1. Increase tool life by cooling the cutting edge.

2. Decrease tool-chip friction by providing a lubricant between chip and tool.

3. Provide better finish on the workpiece.

4. Reduce forces on the tool and hence economize in power consumption.

The disadvantages of cutting fluids
1. For certain machining processes, it requires a costly engineering system for
the application of cutting fluid.

2. Disposal of the fluids prepared is not an easy task as it requires a long time
and can cause environmental issues.

3. The fluid prepared needs to be prepared and after use needs to be filtered
for reuse or disposal.

4. Some fluids cause health hazards due to chemicals and additives added
while preparation. If not used properly can cause health issues.

5. Some metal is affected due to the use of cutting fluids so, we have to use it
carefully.

6. Some of the materials get affected due to thermal shock so again use it
carefully.
Cutting Fluid Applications
Cutting fluids are used in many industries but specifically in the metalworking industry.
Cutting with the tools having low strength as high-speed steels requires the use of cutting
fluids. This is because cutting at high speed increases the temperature of the tool,
reducing its mechanical strength thus reducing the life of the tool.

In this example, using cutting fluids can help in reducing the temperature of the tool
allowing it to function properly. Operations were using cutting fluids are essential are
drilling, broaching, milling, threading, with huge momentum.
