Research Methods and Presentation - ch3

The document discusses various methods for collecting data in research. It describes primary and secondary data collection and some common methods like observation, interviews, and questionnaires. Specifically, it provides details on: 1) Observation methods which collect information directly without asking respondents but can be subjective and limited in scope. 2) The differences between questionnaires which use written closed-ended questions, and interviews which are formal oral conversations that can include open-ended questions. 3) Key factors to consider in data collection like relevance, accuracy, and using standardized tools.

Chapter Three :Data collections methods

Contents:
Data collection basics
Method of data collection

Data collection methods:

Data
collections
methods

3
Data collection methods:
What is Data?

 Is a collection of facts, such as values or measurements.

 can be:

 Qualitative(it describes something)

 Quantitative(numerical information)

Discrete data can only take certain values (like whole numbers)

 Continuous data can take any value (within a range)

4
Data collection methods:
In the data collection the following precautions should be

observed:

 The data must be relevant to the research problem.

 The data should have minimum measurement error .

 The data should be collected through objective procedure.

 The data should be accurate and precise

6
Data collection methods:
In the data collection the following precautions should be

observed:

 The data should be reliable and valid.

 The data should be such that these can be presented and interpreted easily

 It should be collected through formal or standardized research tools.

 The scientific researches require the data by means of some standardized

research tools or self-designed instrument

6
Data collection methods:

8
Data collection methods:
Type of data collections:

 Primary:

data collected by a researcher for the first time.

 Secondary:

are those which have already been collected by someone else and

which have already been passed through the statistical process

8
Data collection methods:
 primary data collection methods:
 Observation
 Interview
 questioners

9
Data collection methods: Observation
methods

 used method especially in studies relating to behavioral sciences

 the information is sought by way of investigator’s own direct
observation without asking from the respondent

10
Data collection methods: Observation
methods
Advantages Limitations
Subjective bias is eliminated if It is an expensive method
observation done accurately
Information obtained under this method The information provided by this method
relates to what is currently happening; it is very limited
is not either the past behavior or future
intentions or attitudes

independent of respondents willingness Sometimes unforeseen factors may

interfere with the observational task

Suitable in studies which deal with

subjects, who are not
capable of giving verbal reports of their
feelings for one reason or the other

11
Data collection methods: questioner vs interview
Basis for comparison Questioner Interview

Meaning implies a form consisting of is a formal conversation

a series of written or printed between the interviewer and
multiple choice questions, to respondent wherein the two
be marked by the informants participates in the question
answer session.

form Written Oral

Questions Closed Ended Open Ended/close ended
Cost Economical Expensive
