Power System Lab 2

The document discusses a power systems lab course that introduces students to various power system software tools. The course objectives are to help students learn how to use pre-programmed software packages to perform basic power system studies and differentiate the specifications of each tool. The document lists five major power system software tools and provides links for more information on each. It also outlines the expected course outcomes related to modeling, load flow analysis, linear analysis, and time-domain simulation in each software.

SYSTEM
LAB 2 •Course Instructor : Prof. Nilanjan Senroy
ELP-871
•Total Credits: 03
•Slot: Tuesday ( 2:00 PM-6:00 PM)
OBJECTIVES:
• To introduce various power system softwares to students.
• The aim of this course is not to derive theory or to code the theory of
power systems but to learn using pre-programmed software packages
for doing power system study.
• To help students perform basic power system study in each software.
• To differentiate and appreciate the specifications of each software.
The List of Softwares:
1. Simscape Electrical (formerly SimPowerSystems and SimElectronics)
This provides component libraries for modeling and simulating electronic, mechatronic, and electrical power systems. For
documentation, visit https://in.mathworks.com/help/pdf_doc/sps/sps_ug.pdf.

2. PSAT (Power System Analysis Toolbox)

The Power System Analysis Toolbox (PSAT) is a Matlab toolbox for electric power system analysis and simulation developed
by Federico Milano. To know more, visit http://faraday1.ucd.ie/archive/psat/psat_presentation.pdf

3. PSS/E (Power System Simulation for Engineers)

It is commercial software developed by Siemens Power Technologies International. To know more, visit

4. PSCAD (Power Systems Computer Aided Design)

PSCAD is a time domain simulation software for analyzing transients in electrical networks developed by Manitoba Hydro International Ltd.
(MHI). To know more, visit https://www.pscad.com/knowledge-base/download/pscad_manual_v4_6.pdf.

5. DigSilent PowerFactory (DIgital SImuLation and Electrical NeTwork

calculation program)
PowerFactory is a leading power system analysis software, which covers the full range of functionality from standard features
to highly sophisticated and advanced applications. To know more, visit https://www.digsilent.de/en/downloads.html.
COURSE OUTCOMES:

Towards the end of this course, the students should be able to:
• Do multimachine modeling of power system in each
software.
• Perform load flow of power system in each software.
• Do the Linear analysis of power system in each software.
• Do time domain simulation of power system in each
software.
