1.0 INTRODUCTION
Drilling technology has come a long way approximately 4000 years ago when ingenious Chinese erected and
commissioned the first cable tool drilling rig. Over the years, drilling technology has evolved with the
introduction of more robust, durable drilling rigs that can perform in various environments from the
humongous city like off-shore rigs to the highly efficient rigs on-shore.
In this project, the concise elaborate modifications that have been engineered on a used incomplete diamond
drilling rig are sentimentally described. The main purpose of the rig is to be used in water drilling alongside
exploration and investigation drilling, geotechnical surveys as well as environmental investigations within the
African continent.
Additionally, the project seeks to fabricate an effective, controllable drilling rig that assures and complies with
safety of rig personnel and environment. The Alternative Services, a dully registered company is sponsoring
the project together with its team of four qualified personnel whom will be deciding crucial design and
technical requirements.
For the purpose of this project, existing drilling technologies, drilling tools and accessories have been
researched upon to come up with a final working intricate rig design and tools. The final design makes use of a
diesel engine that provides power which is transmitted via tension belts to the necessary mechanisms. Lastly,
the drill rig and its components will be tested in an actual drilling endeavor.

RIG
The team obtained an incomplete drilling rig
as show on the picture in the left. The parts
available on the rig include:-
1. Gear Box
2. Hydraulic Pump
3. Hydraulic Tank
4. Diesel Engine (3-Cylinder Peter Lister)
The rig lacks essential components that are
necessary for safe, efficient operation such
as:-
5. Fuel Tank
6. Starter motor, wiring and switch box
7. Drilling head

The engine on the rig is a Peter Lister diesel engine
TR3 which can either be started manually using a
fly wheel or by electric start using a switch with a 12
volts battery connection.
The hydraulic pump basically provides supply of
hydraulic in high pressure which is used in lowering
and raising the quill connected to the drill head. The
flow of the hydraulic fluid is controlled by a drilling
valve which flows as per the needs of the operator.
The hydraulic tank provides storage of hydraulic
fluids up to a capacity of about 60 liters.

which is also has gear oil which basically cools the

2.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT & MAIN
OBJECTIVE
2.1 PROBLEM STATEMENT
There has been an increase in demand for drilling driven by a need for water wells and geotechnical
surveys. As a result, a team of specialists from The Alternative Services Ltd are to fabricate and
produce final design from an incomplete used diamond drill rig to be used in Eastern Africa for water
drilling among other drilling needs.
This project aims to provide insight into the technology which is responsible for making drilling as a
whole achievable as well as utilize the knowledge in fabricating a functional drilling rig. Additionally,
the knowledge gained will also be vital in equipping a driller, assistant driller and mechanics with
expertise of detecting challenges that might arise during drilling operation.
2.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
The chief objective of this project is to rehabilitate and fabricating a fully functional drilling rig from a used
incomplete rig which has only an engine, gear box, hydraulic pump. The rig’s functionality will be
tested to ascertain its ability to handle a drilling project.
The project seeks to utilize local content in terms of experts whom will be responsible for not only
bringing the drilling rig to life but also perform actual water drilling project.
3.0 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. To be able to drill to a depth range between 0 to 100 meters.
2. The borehole diameter shall be a maximum of 12 inches with a minimum of 4
inches.
3. Exposed gears, belts and pulleys are forbidden as safety requirements.
4. The rig must be able to be operated efficiently by a minimum of 4 trained personnel.
5. The rig should be able to be transported in one full unit and not weigh more than 1
ton.
6. To produce a robust drill rig able to handle 10 drill jobs before requiring component
replacement.
7. The finished rig to be able to reach high drilling speeds more than 1000 revolutions
per minute.
8. Perform actual drilling for water and observe machine behavior as per the formation
that is being drilled.
4.0 Research
methodology
The team first analyzed the drill rig before
embarking on gathering valuable data on drilling
rigs from vast literature sources and utilizing
practical knowledge to formulate and engineer a
fully functional drill rig.
The information gathered and technical know-how
will be critically scrutinized with respect to health,
environment and safety guidelines, as well as
efficient machinery operation to be able to
fabricate and come up with a robust multipurpose
drilling machine.
Additionally, the project is being handled from the
perspective of an experience driller whose input
will be vital. On the other hand, a mechanical
engineer with extensive marine machinery
knowledge is also part of the team bringing in
technical know-how.
4.1 Design Development
After careful scrutiny and consideration, the team established that a drill rig needs three important components to
achieve a drilling endeavor. First, there must exist a source of power which provides torque. The source of power
is a diesel engine as far as this project is concerned.
Secondly, the power generated in the form of torque has to be transmitted from the engine to other drill
components such as the gear box as well as hydraulic pump. Lastly, there should be a means through which the
bit is fed or pressure is applied to be able to advance in depth when drilling.
The Diamond drill rig utilizes a hydraulic pump embedded with two hydraulic cylinders connected to the yoke on
the drill head which provides thrust or pressure to the drill string. Other than the drilling rig itself there are
components that are crucial for drilling to take place such as a mud pump, drilling rods and other assorted tools
such as a pipe wrench etcetera.
5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMEMDATIONS
5.1 RESULTS
After fabricating the rig and doing a dry test run, the team was satisfied with the behavior of the rig from fuel
consumption to workability of the rig in terms of mechanical rotation, hydraulic system, electric start,
performance of the gears during rotation. Here are the results as per the objectives. The project that was
handed involved drilling for water a borehole of 25 meters which was successfully completed casing installed
and pump test done.
1. The rig and the mud pump reached a depth of 25 meters with ease. No major breakdowns were noticed
and the depth was drilled in 2 days time.
2. The borehole diameter that was drilled in the project was 9 inches as per the bot that was used in the
project. The team was satisfied with the result after which a six inch casing was installed for well
completion.
3. The team made sure that exposed parts of the rig that are turning are carefully covered especially the
transmission from the engine to the gearbox as well as hydraulic pump.
4. The rig was operated by one personally as the driller, assistant driller and two casuals who acted as
rough necks.
5. The rig successfully completed a borehole without any inconveniences reported as far as safety of
personnel and machine is concerned.
5.2 RECOMENDATIONS
FUTURE
As per the performance of the rig and other drilling accessories these are some of the recommendations to
consider.
1. The rig should be mounted on a truck to allow for ease of transportation or should be mount on a trailer.
2. The drill rods should be modified or others outsourced so as to pass through the quil to save time during
adding drill rods while advancing the borehole.
3. Digging mud pits is tiresome as a result, portable mud pits should be fabricated to increase efficiency.
4. The mast pulleys should be improved and bearings installed to allow for ease of operation of the winch
while pulling out drill rods as well as adding.
