Dangling Modifiers

This document provides instructions and examples for identifying and correcting dangling modifiers. It begins with an activity having students act out song titles without speaking. It then defines a dangling modifier as a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence. Examples are given of dangling modifiers and how to correct them by specifying what the modifier is describing. An activity has students determine the grammatically correct sentence among options. Another activity asks students to rewrite sentences to repair dangling modifiers. The document concludes with an assignment to list examples of dangling modifiers and examples of active and passive voice.

What is Dangling Modifiers?

A dangling modifier is a word or group of words

that describes something that is missing in a
sentence, such as a noun or a pronoun. Therefore,
it is a modifier that has nothing to describe or
modify.
Correcting a Dangling Modifier

Dangling modifiers make the meaning of a

sentence unclear and sometimes illogical. This
type of error occurs because of a failure to indicate
the word that the modifier should be describing.
Examples:
1 Climbing a tree, saw my water jug fell on
the ground.

“Climbing a tree, I saw my water jug fall

on the ground.”
When six years old, my father went to
2 law school.
