As an individual person, you
have self-hood (that is,
individuality). You have
individual aspirations, needs,
rights and responsibilities.
Can two people have the exact same
personality?
No. We all have unique personalities. We are all
different from each other. Each one of us represent a
unique mix of different personality traits. No other
person has the same mix of personality traits as you
have.

A person exists to relate with others. The
person is by nature a social being because
he/she tends to form bonds and relationships
with others.

with their childhood, into their teenage

practice taking care of our elderly family
members. Western countries, give more
emphasis on independence and individuality. It
is common practice in western families to send
their elderly to retirement house.

Thomas Hobbes
He believed that a person in
their natural states are
governed by their desires,
and these often lead to
conflict with their fellowmen.
Society is the means by which
people seek to control their
natural tendencies and
impose order.

He considered persons in
their natural states as more
cooperate and reasonable,
and that society is formed
through the consent of the
individuals that organized
it. This is known as the
consent of the governed.

He advocate the concept of the
“general will”. He believed the
government can impose its will
on the people. This is based on
the assumption that people have
empowered the government to
act on their behalf, and it is the
best judge of what is most
beneficial to the society.
John Rawls
He introduced a version of the
natural state which called the
“original position” to explain social
formation. He imagined humans as
having “veil of ignorance” or no
knowledge of one’s own
characteristics such as gender, race,
or social status. In this state,
humans would naturally seek a just
and fair society to look out for their
interest.
David Gauthier
He described people’s self–interest
as a significant factor in building
and maintaining societies. People
choose to cooperate since it is
beneficial to meet their self-
interest . But this selfish interest
benefits society, since the actions
of individuals in meeting their
needs also further the interest of
the other members of society .

the emergence of society to the human
