Apprenticeships - quick refresher
• Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study
through a formal training programme with a registered
provider; off the job training at least 20% of time
• Based around a standard describing the knowledge, skills and
behaviours (KSBs) needed to carry out the role and a plan for
End Point Assessment through which the apprentice
demonstrates competence in KSBs
• Developed by employer groups supported by the Institute for
Apprenticeships

End Point Assessment (EPA)
• Final assessment of the apprenticeship; gives apprentice the
opportunity to show that they have the knowledge, skills and
behaviours required for the role.
• Delivered by an independent registered apprentice assessment
organisation (RAAO), not the training provider or employer –
CILIP Pathways. Guidance documents.
• EPA period is a maximum of 3 months and starts when
apprentice has met the Gateway requirements

EPA Gateway requirements
• Achieved Maths and English at Level 2
• Spent a minimum of 12 months on the programme
• Employer should be satisfied that you are consistently working
at or above the level of the occupational standard and that you
feel ready for EPA
• Employer and training provider sign the Gateway Declaration
Form and training provider submits it to CILIP Pathways along
with portfolio of evidence and evidence of eligibility

Content of EPA
2 elements:
1. Work based project report and presentation with questions
Scope and title agreed with employer, Project Approval Form
completed within 7 days of start of EPA period
Preparation via teaching sessions, specific project planning
sessions, workplace observation and questioning
2. Professional discussion, underpinned by a portfolio
10-15 pieces of evidence with appendices. Preparation via
teaching sessions. Assignments cover portfolio topics.
