Agenda:
• Definition of blood sugar screening tests
• Types of blood sugar screening tests
• Interpretation of results
• Importance of regular screening Screening Tests
Blood Sugar Screening Tests:
Definition:
Blood tests used to measure the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Purpose: Assessing
blood glucose levels for diagnosing and managing conditions like diabetes.
Types of Screening Tests:
Fasting Blood Glucose Test:
Description: Measures blood glucose after an overnight fast
(typically 8 hours).
Normal Range: Typically 70-99 mg/dL (milligrams per
deciliter).
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):
Description: Measures blood glucose after fasting and then
consuming a glucose-rich beverage.
Normal Range: Fasting: <100 mg/dL; 2 hours after: <140
mg/dL.
Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Test:
Description: Measures average blood glucose levels over the
past 2-3 months.
Normal Range: <5.7% indicates normal glucose metabolism.
Interpretation of Results
Fasting Blood Glucose Test:
Normal: 70-99 mg/dL
Prediabetes: 100-125 mg/dL
Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or higher
Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):
Normal: Fasting <100 mg/dL; 2 hours after <140 mg/dL
Prediabetes: Fasting 100-125 mg/dL; 2 hours after 140-199 mg/dL
Diabetes: Fasting 126 mg/dL or higher; 2 hours after 200 mg/dL or higher
Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Test:
Normal: <5.7%
Prediabetes: 5.7-6.4%
Diabetes: 6.5% or higher
Importance of Regular Screening Early Detection:
Identifying abnormalities before symptoms appear allows for early intervention and prevention of
complications.
Disease Management: Monitoring blood glucose levels helps in managing diabetes and preventing
complications.
Lifestyle Modifications: Results can guide lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise to maintain
healthy blood sugar levels.
Conclusion
Recap: Blood sugar screening tests are essential for diagnosing and managing conditions like diabetes.
Takeaway: Regular screening can lead to early detection and effective management of blood sugar
levels
Call to Action: Consult with a healthcare professional for personalized screening recommendations
and interpretation of results.
