There once lived a king of Persia whose
reigns was beset with troubles. This state of affairs
kept the monarch disturbed. He used to pray:
“great Khizer grant me your vision!”

Khizer had been a very pious and wise sage.

He had drunk of nectar, the water of Eternal Life,
and had thus obtained a lease of life until the Day
of Judgement. In Persia, whoever has any problem
weighing upon his mind would pray to him for
guidance and spiritual satisfaction. And, he would
appear to the supplicants, dressed in green attire,
and comfort them.
The king thought that if only he could see
the great Khizer, all his trouble would disappear. He
therefore made a proclamation that whoever
would show him the prophet would be rewarded
by the king whatever was asked.
Among his subjects was a poor man who
was badly in debt, for he had fallen on bad days. He
could see no way to feed and clothed his family, let
alone pay his debts. When he had heard of the
announcement, he went to the palace and asked
the king for one thousand tumans, pledging that he
would fulfill the condition laid down.
The poor man was paid the sum on the condition
that he must show the great Khizer to the king within
forty days; otherwise he would be executed. He accepted
the terms, paid off his debts, and provided the family
with food and clothing. After a good repast settled down
to ponder his course of action. This went on thirty-nine
days, and yet he has no solution to grim the problem. On
the fourteenth day, the man said, “wife, I got this money
from the king on condition that I show him the vision of
great Khizer. Well that was only a ruse, for, I know not
where the great Khizer is, and so the king will execute
me.”
She became very sad and started crying. “Mourn not,
wife,” he said. My debts are paid off. You and the children are
provided for. What does it matter: If I die now? So saying, he took
leave and went straight to the palace to present himself to the
king.
What do you
think happened
next?
“Aha, old man! Am I going to see the
great Khizer now?” the king inquired of him.
“Your Majesty!” replied the old man.
“How could you believe that I, an ordinary
man, could summon the great Khizer to you! I
was in debt and couldn’t feed my family. I took
the thousand tumans from you for I could turn
to no one else. Thus I paid of my debts and
provided for my family. Now I have come to
offer myself to you, Gracious Sire, for
whatever you wish to do to me.”
“Unusual situation” the king thought
aloud. “I haven’t the least idea as to how
to deal with this matter with fairness and
equity.” Immediately the viziers were
summoned for counsel.
“Counsel me how to proceed with
this man,” the king asked them. While the
viziers drew near the king, the old man
entered the chamber quietly and stood
by.
What will the
viziers advice the
king?
The first vizier said: “The man’s flesh should
be cut with scissors. This is what he deserves.”
The second vizier opened: “The
rascal should be put in a baker’s hot
oven to be burnt to ashes.”
The third vizier: “I would cut him
into pieces with a razor. That is how
the swindler must be treated.
How would the story
end? What wise
decision do you think
will be a good ending?
The fourth vizier deliberated for a
while; then he said: Your Majesty, let us
view the matter coolly.” He paused a while
again.
Everybody was attentive to listen to
the wise vizier. He added: “The man no
doubt played a trick but he is ready to abide
by the king’s decision. Thus he has played
fairly. I suggest that he be paid more money
so that he is able to start a new life.”

James picked up the rake and stared cleaning up the piles of leaves. His
mom told him he could go and play once he was done with the yard. Ten
minutes passed, when James friend Mario skated past on the sidewalk. Mario
stopped and said, “Hey James! You want to go to the skate park?”. James
mumbled, “I can’t, I have to finish the yard first!”. Mario laughed a little and
said, “But they are giving away free skateboards and ice cream! Are you going
to pass that up?”. Jams glanced back at his house. Maybe she won’t mind if I
go for 5 minutes, he thought himself and it’s really hot out here.
