Function Notation
⫸ ⫸ Now, we will use:
In Years 7 – 10 we used:
𝑦 𝑓 ( 𝑥)
(𝑥, 𝑦 ) ( 𝑥 , 𝑓 ( 𝑥))
𝑥 𝑥
⫸ we say as “ of ” which means “the function with respect to the variable ”
⫸ We usually use , but we can also use functions like or
Function Notation
⫸ We have been used to seeing:
or or
⫸ We will now see:
or or
⫸ This allows us to see the input and output in the same line
⫸ Instead of writing “When ”, we can just write “”
Example 1.
a.) A function is defined by the rule . Find , and
b.) Find the value of
⫸ A piecewise function is made up of 2 or more functions defined on different
intervals2. If

Let us model for a moment
⫸ Pretend that I throw a ball 20 m into the
air and then catch it again.
⫸ This situation can be modelled using the
graph to the right
⫸ The vertical axis represents the height of
the ball above my hand in metres (), and
the horizontal axis represents the time
that has passed in seconds ()
⫸ We can see from the graph it took 4
seconds until I caught it again.
Let us model for a moment output values:
⫸ Notice that the graph does not go on
forever (the end points do not have
arrows on them)
⫸ The graph has restrictions on the input
values so that only values between 0 and
4 seconds were used.
⫸ Think why would we need restrictions on
a graph like this?
⫸ 𝟎≤𝒕 ≤𝟒
The domain of this function is the set of
all input values:
⫸ 𝟎 ≤ 𝒅 ≤ 𝟐𝟎
The range of this function is the set of all
Domain and Range
⫸ The domain of a function is the set of all possible -
coordinates
⫸ The range of a function is the set of all possible -coordinates
Example 1. Write down the domain and range of the functions below
a.) b.)
The Natural Domain
⫸ If there are no restrictions given, the domain is all -values
is called the natural domain or all real
⫸ There are many reasons that we cannot substitute a
number into an equation:
⫸ We cannot divide by zero
⫸ We cannot take the square root of negative numbers
Example 2. Find the natural domain of the following equations
a.) b.)
