CAPYBARA
What is an Capybara?
Capybara or Greater Capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America. It is the
largest living rodent.
The only other extant member is the lesser capybara. Its close relatives are guinea pigs
and rock cavies.
The Capybara can weigh up to 50 kg. and 1.3 m. long and it is a gentle animal.
The common name of the Capybara is thought to mean "Master of the Grasses", whilst its
scientific name comes from the Greek word for water hog.
What a Capybara looks like?
Capybara has a heavy, barrel-shaped body and short head, with
reddish-brown fur on the upper part of its body that turns yellowish-
brown underneath. Its sweat glands can be found in the surface of the
hairy portions of its skin, an unusual trait among rodents. The animal
lacks down hair, and its guard hair differs little from over hair.
Their hind legs are slightly longer than their forelegs; they have three
toes on their rear feet and four toes on their front feet. Their muzzles
are blunt, with nostrils, and the eyes and ears are near the top of their
heads.
WHERE DO
THEY LIVE?
Capybaras are semiaquatic mammals
found throughout almost all countries of
South America(Except Chile) and Japan.
They live in densely forested areas near
bodies of water, such as lakes, rivers,
swamps, ponds, and marshes well as
flooded savannah and along rivers in the
tropical rainforest.

ALIMENTATION
OF CAPYBARA

animal that only eats plant
matter in order to acquire all of
the nutrients it needs.
The diet of the Capybara is
mainly made up of grasses and
aquatic plants, along with fruits
and berries and the occasional
munch on soft tree bark.
While they eat grass during
the wet season, they have to
switch to more abundant reeds
during the dry season.
THE LIFESTYLE OF CAPYBARA
The Capybara is a very sociable
animal that tends to inhabit densely
vegetated areas close to water in
