Descriptive writing

Descriptive writing is a style of writing that paints a vivid picture in

the reader’s mind by appealing to the senses.
Purpose of descriptive writing

1. To create a detailed mental image

2. To evoke emotions or moods

3. To engage the reader fully

Key features of descriptive writing

1. Sensory details: Sight, sound, smell, taste, touch

2. Figurative language: similes, metaphors, personification and

hyperbole

3. Precise Vocabulary: use specific vivid words (e.g. scarlet instead of

red)

4. Imagery: Create picture with words

Steps to write Descriptively

1. Choose a topic: a place, person, object or experience

2. Visualize and plan: Imagine the scene; jot down sensory details

3. Start with a strong hook: Example: “The crisp morning air was filled with
the sweet aroma of blooming jasmine.”

4. Develop the body: Include sensory and figurative details.

5. Conclude effectively: Summarize the mood or leave a lasting impression

Example of descriptive writing

1. Describing a place: The sun dipped below the horizon, spreading a fiery
orange glow across the tranquil sea, as the waves whispered secrets to the
sandy shore.

2. Describing a person: Her eyes sparkled like dew-kissed morning grass,

reflecting both curiosity and wisdom beyond her eyes.

3. Describing an event: The bustling market overflowed with vibrant colors,

from the deep yellow of sunflowers, as the chatter of vendors filled the air.
Common mistakes to avoid

1. Too many adjectives: Avoid overloading sentences with unnecessary

sentence with unnecessary modifiers

2. Clichés: Use fresh , original description

3. Lack of focus: Stick to one perspective or subject

4. Telling instead of showing: Instead of saying, “she was scared” show it,
“Her hands trembled, and her breath came in short, uneven gasps.”
