LADDER
LADDERS
A piece of equipment that is used for climbing up something.
Types of Ladders
• Fixed
• Portable
• Single
• Extension
• Step ladder
LADDER
POSITIONING LADDERS
• Make sure that the ladder is long enough for the job.
• Place on a firm base, set angle approx..750
• Do not place a ladder in front of a door
• Always place the ladder on firm ground
• Place ladder on a clean slip free level surface.
• Make sure ladders are firmly secured
• Extension over an elevated area - approx.. 3 feet / 1 meter
• Single and extension ladders – always use in Vertical
position
• Do not allow other to work under a ladder in use.
LADDER
ASCENDING AND DESCENDING
• Hold on with both hands
• Always face the ladder
• Never slide down
• Ensure shoes/work boots are free from oil and grease
• Only one person on ladder at a time
• Never climb
a) Higher than third rung from top for straight ladder
b) Higher than second tread from top for step ladder
• Always maintain 3 points of contact with the ladder
• Do not carry anything - Use carriers and tool belts to carry
objects up a ladder

• Fully opened and locked
Maximum height
• Single ladder – 9 meters
• Extension ladder – 15 meters
Extension ladder
• Fully extended minimum overlap 4 rungs

INSPECTION
Before use
• Scaffolding ladders
• Inspect during scaffold inspection
• If damaged - Tag “Out of Service”
• Portable ladders
• Registered, Serial number /department ID
• Register
• Date of inspection / inspector's name
• Report deficiencies
LADDER
CRITERIA FOR INSPECTION
• Unique identifying tag or number
• Non-slip shoe at the base
• Rungs are intact and are not bent
• Wooden ladders are not painted
• Annual NDT checks - shop-made ladders
• Spreaders or other locking devices are in place.
• All rungs and steps are free of oil, grease, dirt, etc.
• No structural defects, all support braces intact.

STORAGE
• Do Not Store Aluminum ladders where likely to come in
contact with caustic / lime / wet cement
• Store ladders on sturdy hooks in areas where they cannot CAUSTIC
be damaged. Store to prevent warping or sagging. Do not
hang anything on ladders that are in a stored condition.
LADDER MAINTENANCE
• Keep ladders clean
• Never replace broken parts unless provided by the original manufacturer
• Do not attempt to repair broken side rails
• Keep all threaded fasteners properly adjusted
• Replace worn steps with parts from manufacturer

LADDER HAZARDS
Falls from ladders can result in broken bone and death.
Ladder safety is a life saving program at our company.
Hazards include:
•Ladders with missing or broken parts.
•Using a ladder with too low a weight rating
•Using a ladder that is too short for purpose.
•Using ladders as a working platform
•Objects falling from ladders
•Using ladders in uncontrolled high traffic areas
•Electrical hazards
Do not use Aluminum or metal ladders
Use Fiberglass or Wooden ladders
LADDER
ACCIDENTS WITH LADDERS
Ladders slip because :-
• The ladder is not secured properly
• The ladder used on soft or uneven ground
• Placing the ladder at an unsuitable angle
(recommended angle is 1 out to every 4 up
(75 degrees)
• Unsafe use of ladder such as overreaching,
sliding down, carrying materials up or
down a ladder
