Darwinian Revolution

The document discusses Charles Darwin's revolutionary theory of evolution, which posits that all species have descended from common ancestors through the process of natural selection. It outlines the fundamental concepts of Darwin's theory, including variation, inheritance, population growth, and differential survival. The theory emphasizes that species change over time and that evolutionary change is gradual.

Darwinian

Revolution
What is Darwinian
Revolution?
~ Charles Darwin’s theory
REVOLUTIONIZED the direction of future
scientific thought. Though it was built
on a growing body of thought that
began to question prior ideas about the
natural world.
Who is Charles Darwin?
~ Charles Darwin was an
English naturalist,
geologist and biologist,
best known for his
contributions to
evolutionary biology. His
proposition that all species
of life have descended
from common ancestors is
now widely accepted and
considered a fundamental
concept in science.
~ He discovered a lot as a
scientist and naturalist.
As an author, he impacted
science and the way we
think about our world. He
develop and proposed a
theory about evolution.
His theory has had far-
reaching affects on
science and the way we
understand life.
The core of darwinian

revolution is natural

selection
What is natural selection?
~ Natural
selection is the
process through
which
populations of
living organisms
adapt and
change.
~ Charles Darwin’s theory of
evolution states that evolution
happens by natural selection.

~Individuals in a species show

variation in physical characteristics.
This variation is because of
differences in their genes.
Variation
~ Variation is
the differences
in the
characteristics
of the
individuals
within a
species.
genes
~ Carry
information
that makes you
who you are
and what you
look like.
Darwin’s theory of
evolution entails
the following
fundamental ideas.
SPEcies change over time
and space

~Representatives of species living today

differ from those that lived in the recent
past.
All organisms share common
ancestors with other
organism

~ Shared ancestry explains the

similarities of organisms that are
classified together: their similarities
reflect the inheritance of traits from
common ancestors.
Evolutionary change is
gradual and slow in darwin’s
view.

~ This claim was supported by the long

episodes of gradual change in organisms
in the fossil record and the fact that no
naturalist had observed the sudden
appearance of new species in Darwin’s
time.
Four Components of darwin’s
process of natural selection

1. VARIATION
2. INHERITANCE
3. HIGH RATE OF POPULATION GROWTH
4. DIFFERNTIAL SURVIVAL AND
REPRUDUCTION
1. Variation

~ Variation is the
differences in the
characteristics of
the individuals
within a species.
2. INHEritance

~ Some traits are

consistently
passed
on from parent
to offspring.
3. High rate of population
growth
~ Most
populations have
more offspring
each year than
local resources
can support
leading to a
struggle for
resources.
4. Differential survival

~Individuals processing traits well

suited for the struggle for local
resources will contribute more
offspring to next generation.
THAT’S ALL
