Structure of a Nucleotide
A nucleotide is the basic building block of DNA.

● It consists of three components:

○ A phosphate group
○ A deoxyribose sugar (a five-carbon sugar)
○ A nitrogenous base (adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), or guanine (G))

Chargaff’s Rule
● DNA has a 1:1 ratio of pyrimidine (C, T) and purine (A, G) bases.
● Adenine = Thymine and Cytosine = Guanine in any DNA sample.
● This led to understanding how DNA bases pair.

Rosalind Franklin’s Contribution

● Rosalind Franklin used X-ray diffraction to study the structure of DNA.
● Her famous "Photo 51" provided crucial evidence that DNA has a helical structure.
● Her work laid the foundation for Watson & Crick’s double-helix model.

Watson & Crick’s Double-Helix Model

● DNA is structured as a double helix, resembling a twisted ladder.
● Two strands run in opposite directions (antiparallel).
● Nitrogenous bases pair through hydrogen bonds: A with T (2 bonds), C with G (3 bonds).
● The helical structure allows DNA to store and transmit genetic information efficiently.
