PAGERS AND BEEPERS
Pagers are also known as Beepers. It is a device that emits short, high-pitched sounds as a
signal.
Pagers were originally designed and built in the 1950's but they didn't really take
hold in terms of popularity until the 1980's. These one-way communication devices
were often used by emergency services, doctors and safety personnel who needed
to be reachable at all times, even when away from a landline telephone.
It is a wireless telecommunications device that receives and displays alphanumeric or voice
messages. One-way pagers can only receive messages, while response pagers and two-way
pagers can also acknowledge, reply to, and originate messages using an internal transmitter.
HISTORY OF PAGERS/BEEPERS
Gross' gizmos invented pagers. He died in Dec. 21 in Sun City, Ariz, at the age of 82.
He invented the walkie-talkie, the wireless pager and the cordless telephone
No one knew that by the end of the 20th century, about 300 million pocket
pagers would be in use around the world.
The rise of smartphones in the early 2000s saw the decline in the use of pagers /
beepers but due to the durability, resilience and better coverage they continued to
see use for several more years and, as an example, Canada was still paying as
much as $18.5 million for its pager service in 2013.
