WRITING A BOOK

REVIEW
L E SS O N 2
BOOK REVIEW

A book review is a type of

literary criticism in which a
book's content and style are
evaluated and analyzed. It can
be a primary review or an
opinion piece that may be
published in periodicals,
newspapers, or websites.
BOOK REVIEW

In writing a book review, it is essential

that you first read the book and ponder
on its content carefully. As you begin to
write the review, begin with an
appealing sentence to set the tone and
hook the readers. Include the title of the
book, the author's name, and important
information about the book’s edition
and his other works.
BOOK REVIEW

Also include important information

about the book’s author such as
his/her educational background,
qualifications, reputation, and
anything relevant that would
establish the author’s authority and
credibility.
1.THE CRITIC MUST REPORT
WHAT THE BOOK DOES.
a. What did the book discuss
about its theme?
b. How were the facts presented?
c. Why was it different from the
other books that he has also
read?
d. Why was it different from other
written works of the author?
2. YOU MUST JUDGE HOW
WELL THE AUTHOR HAS DONE
HIS JOB.
a. What can you say about the
author’s style? Did this style
appeal to you? How?

The reviewer’s judgment is important

in a book review! Without his
pronounced statement about the
effectivity or the noneffectivity of the
book, the review will cease to serve its
purpose.
3. YOU MUST PROVIDE ENOUGH
EVIDENCE FROM THE BOOK ITSELF TO
SUPPORT OR TO ILLUSTRATE HIS
JUDGMENT.
The reviewer should back up
their opinions with specific
examples from the book. Instead
of just saying, "The book has a
unique writing style," the reviewer
should provide an actual excerpt
or describe a scene that
demonstrates this uniqueness.
4. THE REVIEWER MUST BE FAIR IN MAKING
HIS OWN JUDGMENT ABOUT SOMEBODY
ELSE’S WRITTEN WORK.

Personal prejudices should not come

in the way of the book appraisal.

Saying "I don't like fantasy, so this book

is bad" is unfair. Instead, they could write:
"Although I am not a fan of fantasy, the
book effectively builds a rich and immersive
world with well-developed characters."
BOOK REVIEW VS. ARTICLE
CRITIQUE

An article critique is similar to a book

review, but it analyzes and comments
on an article or text, instead of an
entire book.
Just like a book review, an article
critique is not just a summary but a
commentary. It presents a critical
assessment of the article’s content, and
may offer agreement or disagreement
about the ideas written in the article.
EXERCISE: BOOK REVIEW

Choose a book about any

topic of your interest. Write a
book review of the said book.
Follow the conventions
discussed in this lesson.
