Rasta Mohammadi - Copy of (Template) Climate Zone1

The document provides definitions and explanations of key geographical concepts such as climate, weather, latitude, longitude, precipitation, and atmospheric circulation. It discusses how these elements interact to influence global temperatures and weather patterns, particularly emphasizing the effects of Earth's rotation and tilt. Additionally, it includes instructions for researching and presenting climate information for a specific location.

Climate: The weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.

Weather: The temperature and other outside conditions, like heat, wind, rain, or sunshine, at a certain time
and place.

Latitude: Lines of latitude help us find a specific location on Earth. They are not real lines on Earth but are
drawn on maps and globes. Latitude lines are parallel to the equator. The equator is an imaginary line that
is halfway between the North and South Poles. The equator is 0 degrees latitude and places are measured
as north or south of the equator.

Longitude: Lines of longitude help us find a specific location on Earth. The are not real lines but are drawn
on maps and globes. Longitude lines run from the North Pole to the South Pole. The Prime Meridian is 0
degrees longitude. Places are measured as east or west of the Prime Meridian.

Precipitation: Water that falls from clouds to the ground. The water can be in the form or rain, snow, hail, or
sleet (sleet is a mixture of rain and snow and is snow that partially melts as it falls to Earth).
Hemisphere: Half of the Earth (the Earth is a sphere and hemi means “half”). For example, the northern
hemisphere is the half of Earth above the equator and the southern hemisphere is the half of Earth below
the equator.

Ocean Currents: Continuous movement of water in the ocean. Some ocean currents are on the surface
and some are deep below the surface. Surface currents are usually caused by wind. Currents can be
caused by the rotation of the Earth, tides, the amount of salt in the water, the temperature, and water
density.

Atmospheric Circulation: The movement of large air masses around Earth. Unequal heating of the Earth
by the sun creates air circulation because warm warm air rises and cool air sinks. The cool air rushes in to
replace the warm air that has risen.

Rotation of the Earth: It takes about 24 hours for the Earth to rotate on its axis. The tilt of the Earth means
that part of the Earth is closer to the sun and part is further. The rotation of the Earth impacts the movement
of air and ocean currents. This impacts climate and weather.
● Understand how weather and climate are the same and how they are different.

● Understand how areas near the equator receive direct sunlight and areas near the
poles receive indirect sunlight. Near the poles, the heat is spread out over a
larger area.

● Understand what atmospheric circulation and ocean currents and how they are
powered by energy from the sun. Energy from the sun doesn’t heat the Earth
evenly because Earth is a sphere.

● Understand that warm air and ocean water rise and cool air and water sink. Air
and ocean currents are always on the move and regulate global temperatures.

● Understand that atmospheric circulation and ocean currents are caused by the tilt
of the Earth and Earth’s rotation.

● Create a model and explain how the intensity of the sunlight and the rotation of the
Earth impacts weather patterns for an area.

What is weather? What is climate?
Weather and Climate both have to do with the condition of the ____________________ in the air above
Earth.

Weather
Weather has to do with the __________________ temperature, humidity, windspeed, and precipitation. The
weather might be raining in the morning but then sunny in the ______________. Weather often changes. It
is the condition of the ___________ in Earth’s atmosphere.

Climate
Climate is the ____________________ average of conditions, like temperature and precipitation, in an
______________. It can take hundreds, thousands, or _______________ of years for a climate to change.

Rain water falling in drops

Snow ice crystals
Precipitation
Hail little balls of ice

Sleet snow that melts and then refreezes as it falls to Earth.

Latitude and longitude are ____________ that help
us find a specific location on Earth. They aren’t real
lines on Earth. They are lines ______________ on
maps and globes.

Lines of longitude run from the North Pole to the

South ________. The Prime Meridian is 0 degrees
longitude. Places are measured as east or
________ of the _________ Meridian.

Lines of latitude are parallel to the equator. The

___________ is an imaginary line that is halfway
between the North and South Poles. The equator is
0 degrees latitude and places are measured as
_____________ or south of the equator.
How can you find the latitude and longitude for the city you chose to research?

You can use Google maps to find the latitude and longitude.
1. Type in the city or address. Right-click the place or area on the map.
2. Select: What's here?
3. At the bottom, you'll see the coordinates.

Here is a 1 minute video showing you how to find the latitude and longitude using Google
maps. Link HERE

What is the latitude and longitude for the city you chose?
LATITUDE LONGITUDE
(be sure to include north or south) (be sure to include east or west)
More intense sunlight and often hotter climates occur near the equator where
the sun is closer to the Earth.

Climates are often cooler at latitudes farther from the equator because the
sunlight spreads out over a larger area.
