Increasing and Decreasing
Function
Let I = [a, b] be any interval where y = f(x) is
continuous and which does not contain any
critical value of f(x).
1. If f'(x) > 0 for all a < x < b, then f(x) is
increasing in the interval I. (+ )
2.If f'(x) < 0 for all a < x < b, then f(x) is
decreasing in the interval I. (-)
Example 1.
1. f(x)=2x³+9x²+12x-3
6(x+2)(x+1)
=6x²+18x+12
6(-10+2)(-10-1)
=x²+3x+2=0
6(+)(-)
=(x+2)(x+1)=0
x+2=0 x+1=0
x=-2 x=-1

Example 2.
2.f(x)=x³+3x³+3x 3(x+1)²=0
