INTRODUCTION

Overview of the main
problem
Traditional energy meters waste energy and manpower. It 

measures electricity consumption of the household on a

.monthly basis, inefficient for consumers and the company
You have to go to the meter and look at its reading time and 

.time again to keep tabs on the expenditure

For analog meters, consumers cannot know how much each 

unit of current costs and at the end of the month when the
sum total of the cost billed, this is a huge drawback for them
.and more complaints stack up against the authorities
Manual data collection is the only way to keep track of the 

.energy consumption for consumers

Therefore, our motivation to start the project is to eliminate 

these problems and make life easier for consumers and the
.company
Aims and Objectives
Get accurate data readings within the 
.shortest time
Keeping a structured database of the 
consumptions for the user and the
.electricity provider
Creating an opportunity for the 
administration to constantly monitor meter
consumptions and keeping a record of it to
.reduce corruption in the energy sector
Better meter data security 
Smart payment and recharging system for 
higher convenience
The Project Idea
The objective of this project is to design and build a smart 
electric meter using Internet of Things (loT) that reads all
meter data. The Internet of Things meter uses a wireless
connection to communicate the meter's necessary data
to the Saudi Electricity Company. All meter data is
processed on the Blynk application server, and the
electricity company makes the necessary choices. If the
bills are overdue, the server will notify the user and
disconnect the line if necessary. Unlike many current
designs, our smart meter uses WiFi and GSM technologies
to monitor all details of power consumption,
communicate with the Blynk server and send necessary
SMS to the user. We build the system using Arduino, WiFi
and GSM modules along with a relay. This, and practical
experiences have shown that the proposed design is
.effective, characterized by low cost and easy to use
The Project Idea
COMPONENTS

9
Arduino Uno Microcontroller
• Low-cost, flexible, and easy-to-use
programmable open-source
microcontroller board that can be
integrated into a variety of
electronic projects.
Current and Voltage Sensors
The ACS712 Current Sensor

• The ACS712 Current Sensors are designed to

be easily used with micro controllers like the
Arduino.
• These are based on the Allegro ACS712ELC
chip.
• Support full scale values of 5A, 20A and 30A.
• Sensor Specifications 30A Module Supply
Voltage (VCC) 5Vdc.
• Pay attention to the polarity at the load end of
the device. If you are connected as illustrated
below, the output will raise.
• Once connected, the output would be scaled to
the current drawn through the bulb. If this were a
5 Amp module and the light bulb pulled 1 Amp,
the output of the module would be 2.685 volts.
The Connections

• If the light bulb is disconnected, the output of the ACS712 module

would be 2.500 volts.
• Once connected, the output would be scaled to the current drawn
through the bulb.
• If this were a 5 Amp module and the light bulb pulled 1 Amp, the
output of the module would be 2.685 volts.
PZEM-004T Energy meter Module

• AC 80-260V voltage range,

maximum current can reach 100A

• Measure voltage, current, active

power and energy

• Measures Frequency Also

between 45 and 65 Hz

• Power factor 0.0 – 1.0

• Accuracy 1% max in all

measurements
ESP8266 WiFi module
• Compatible Arduino UNO
• Program by Arduino IDE
• 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct (P2P), soft-AP
• Integrated TCP/IP protocol stack
• Integrated TR switch, balun, power
amplifier and matching network
• +19.5dBm output power in 802.11b mode
• Power down leakage current of <10uA
• 4MB Flash Memory
• Integrated low power 32-bit CPU could
be used as application processor
• Wake up and transmit packets in < 2ms
• Standby power consumption of < 1.0mW
(DTIM3)
GSM Module

• Features Quad-Band
850 / 900/ 1800 /
1900 MHz

• Works on GSM
networks in all
countries across the
world

• Programed via AT
Standard Commands

• 5V - 2A DC input
16x2 LCD Display

• 16x2 LCD monitor

Problem:

• Needs soldering all

connection pins
16x2 LCD Display

This is soldered
16x2 LCD Display

Problem:

Too many connections

16x2 LCD Display

Good:

Only 4 wires
