INTRODUCTION
• Qualitative evaluation is a method of assessment focused on non-
numerical insights such as experiences, perceptions, and descriptions.
• Often used in education, social sciences, and program assessment.
• One of the most widely used tools in quantitative evaluation is the
Rating Scale.
• A rating scale is a method that requires the rater to assign a value,
sometimes numeric to the rated object ,as a measure of some rated
attribute.
PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTING RATING
SCALE
• Clarity of Purpose.
• Appropriate Scale Type.
• Unidimensionality.
• Balanced Options.
• Clear and Concise Language.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF RATING
SCALE
• Descriptive rating scale
• Numerical rating scale
• Likert Scale
• Graphic rating scale
Descriptive Rating Scale :
Provide for each traits a list of descriptive phrases
from which the rater selects one most applicable item
being rated ,selected usually by means of a check
mark.
Rating Description
Excellent Knows everything very well
Good Understand well
okay Understand some things
Poor Doesn’t understand
Numerical Rating Scale:
The rater assigns a code numbers and approximate number
to each trait of the person being rated or descriptive
phases.
Likert Scale:
A Likert scale is a useful tool for effective market research to received
feedback on wide range on psychometric attributes. A Likert scale is a good
tool for evaluating employee satisfaction with company policy.
Graphic Rating Scale :
A graphic rating scale is a type of survey or evaluation tool where
respondents rate something (like performance , satisfaction or quality) by
choosing a point along a continuous line or scale. The scale usually has
levels at each end (e.g. “Poor” to “excellence”) and allows for more
feedback than just selecting from a few options.
USES OF RATING SCALE
To Evaluate
• Skills
• Product Outcome
• Activities
• Interest
• Personal traits
ADVANTAGES OF RATING SCALE
• Easy to administer and score
• Wide range of application
• Easily used for large group
• Also used for quantitative methods
• Rating scales are adaptable and flexible research instruments.
DISADVANTAGES OF RATING SCALE
• People may give extreme or neutral ratings without thinking
• Misinterpretation – Different people may understand the scale
differently.
• Limited options – Not enough choices to express true opinion.
• Not suitable for all topics – Some things are too complex to rate with
numbers.
• Fake consistency – People may rate similarly throughout just to finish
quickly.
CONCLUSION
To sum up, evaluation is essential for understanding performance, making
improvements, and supporting decisions. Among the various methods of
quantitative evaluation, rating scales are one of the most effective and
widely used tools. They offer a simple, consistent, and structured way to
collect and interpret data from individuals. Whether in education, research,
business, or customer feedback, rating scales help in measuring attitudes,
behaviors, and satisfaction levels clearly. By choosing the right type of
rating scale and designing it thoughtfully, we can ensure accurate, useful,
and meaningful results. Understanding and using rating scales effectively
can lead to better outcomes in any field that values data-based decision
making.
