RAIL TRANSPORTATION
• The earliest railroads were built in European mines in the 16th century, using cars pulled on
tracks by men or horses.Construction was begun on the first U.S. railroad, the Baltimore
and Ohio, in 1828. Specialized railroad cars were built to transport freight and passengers,
including the sleeping cars developed by George Pullman in 1859.

• Train transport is a land transport that involves wheeled vehicles to ferry passengers and
goods across a network of rails. In the first railway, the wooden rails were used although all
railways today consist of two parallel steel rails. A train consists of a chain of wagons or cars
pulled by steam / diesel / electric locomotives.

• Rail travel products encompass a wide range of options, from basic train tickets to multi-day
rail passes and even specialized train tours. They cater to various travel needs, including
short-distance commuting, regional travel, and long-haul journeys across countries.
TRAVEL PRODUCTS
• Travel products related to transportation encompass various options
used to move people and goods from one place to another. These
products can be broadly categorized into air, land, and water
transport. Air travel includes airlines and airports, while land travel
encompasses vehicles like cars, trains, and buses. Water transport
includes ships, ferries, and cruise lines.
• These transportation products are essential components of the travel
and tourism industry, enabling people to explore and connect with
different destinations.
TYPES OF TRAIN
• Passenger Trains - These are designed to transport people, including
inter-city, commuter, and regional trains.
• Freight Trains - These carry goods, also known as goods trains, and can
be either short-distance or long-distance.
• High Speed Trains - Designed for rapid travel between cities, often on
dedicated tracks.
• Commuter Trains - Primarily connect major cities or towns with
surrounding residential areas.
• Inter City Trains - These travel between cities and are often faster than
regional trains.
• Mail Trains - Carry both passengers and postal mail.
TYPES OF TRAIN
By Type of Propulsion
• Electric Trains: Powered by electricity, often from overhead wires or third rails.
• Diesel Trains: Powered by diesel engines.
• Monorail: Operates on a single rail, often elevated.
• Maglev: Uses magnetic levitation for propulsion, achieving very high speeds.
Other Specialized Types
• Funiculars: Used for steep inclines, often on mountains, pulling cars up with a cable.
• Mass Rapid Transit (MRTS) / Metro: High-capacity urban rail systems with dedicated
tracks, often underground.
• Light Rail Transit (LRT): Operates on fixed rails, often in urban areas, with lighter
passenger capacity than MRTS.
• Elevated Railways: Trains operate on tracks above ground level.
RAILWAY PRESERVATION
• Railway preservation is the practice of saving, restoring, and operating
historic railway equipment and infrastructure for educational,
cultural, and recreational purposes.
• What is Preserved?
1) Rolling Stock
2) Infrastructure
3) Railway Lines
RAILWAY PRESERVATION
Purposes of Railway Preservation
• Heritage and Education: Teaching the public about the development
of rail transport and its societal impact.
• Tourism and Entertainment: Heritage railways attract visitors and
enthusiasts, boosting local economies.
RAILWAY PRESERVATION
Challenges
• Funding: Restoration and maintenance are expensive, and most
preservation relies heavily on donations and ticket sales.
• Volunteer Shortages: Many projects rely on an aging volunteer
base; recruiting and training new enthusiasts is essential.
