Definition of HRM
Human resource management (HRM) is the practice of recruiting, hiring, deploying
and managing an organization's employees. HRM is often referred to simply as
human resources (HR).

The term human resources was first used in the early 1900s, and then more widely
in the 1960s, to describe the people who work for the organization, in aggregate.

HRM is employee management with an emphasis on employees as assets of the

business. In this context, employees are sometimes referred to as human capital. As
with other business assets, the goal is to make effective use of employees, reducing
risk and maximizing return on investment (ROI).

The modern term human capital management (HCM) is often used by large and
midsize companies when discussing HR technology.
Definition of HRM (Contd.)

Human resource management (HRM) is the strategic and coherent approach to the
effective and efficient management of people in a company or organization such that they
help their business gain a competitive advantage. It is designed to maximize
employee performance in service of an employer's strategic objectives.

According to the Invancevich and Glueck, “HRM is concerned with the most effective use of people to
achieve organizational and individual goals. It is the way of managing people at work, so that they
give their best to the organization”.

According to Dessler (2008) the policies and practices involved in carrying out the “people” or human
resource aspects of a management position, including recruiting, screening, training, rewarding, and
appraising comprises of HRM.
