Earth Subsystems Lesson 4

The document outlines the various subsystems of Earth, including the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, and their interconnections that sustain life. It emphasizes that Earth operates as a closed system, exchanging energy but not matter, and describes the impact of natural phenomena like hurricanes and earthquakes on these subsystems. Additionally, it introduces biogeochemical cycles that circulate essential elements within these systems.

EARTH’S

SYSTEMS
LESSON OBJECTIVES

❑ a. Enumerate and describe the different

subsystems of the planet Earth.

❑ Recognize the unique characteristics of the

planet Earth.

❑ Design a diagram of the planet Earth showing the

different interactions of its subsystem.
“Describe Me!”
Directions: Describe our planet
Earth, using a single word for
each of its unique
characteristics.
ACTIVITY
“Picture-to-Text”
Directions: Based on the picture show
identify what factors that makes the
planet Earth habitable is portrayed.
EARTH AS A SYSTEM
The ecospheres of the planet Earth – also known as the
subsystems are interconnected with one another. Through
various related processes and cycles, these subsystems
can store, transform, and transfer matter and energy
within the planet. The connection of these ecospheres
may affect the climate geological activities and overall,
sustain life on planet Earth.
EARTH SYSTEM

• the Earth system refers to Earth’s

interacting physical, chemical and
biological processes.
Earth itself is an integrated system working
together to make Life possible.

Subsystem - a self-contained system

within a larger system.
A. Isolated B. Closed system C. Open system
system
Closed systems exchange energy but not matter with an outside system.
The Earth is essentially a closed system; it obtains lots of energy from the
Sun but the exchange of matter with the outside is almost zero.

B. Closed system
Any change in these systems create a change in
another, making a complex dynamic system.
CONNECTIONS WITHIN THE EARTH SYSTEM
THE GEOSPHERE
• The “Rock Sphere”
• It comprises the solid Earth and
includes both Earth’s surface and the
various layers of the earth’s interior.

These layers provide plants with

the nutrients needed to grow and
contain the different rocks from the
rock cycle.
THE ATMOSPHERE
• The “air sphere”
• The atmosphere is made up of layers of gases that surround the
earth.
• Gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth and constitutes the
transition between it and the vacuum of space.
• Composition of Atmosphere
78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon and some other gasses in trace
amounts.
These layers provide living things with air to breathe, trap heat to warm
earth and create a protective layer from the Sun.
LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE
Exosphere
The final layer stretches into space and houses satellites.

Thermosphere
This is the hottest layer because it absorbs the sun's radiation. Auroras occur in this layer.

Mesosphere
The coldest layer which protects us from meteors because they burn up in this layer.

Stratosphere
The ozone is found in this layer protecting us from UV rays

Troposphere
The layer in which we live and weather occurs.
WHERE IS THE
Anywhere you can find water!

HYRDOSPHERE? Clouds

Glaciers

Lakes

Oceans Ground Water Rivers

THE HYDROSPHERE
• The “water sphere”
• The hydrosphere includes all
water on Earth (including
surface water and ground water)

This water can be found as liquid,

vapor or ice and makes up the water
cycle on Earth.
THE HYDROSPHERE

The hydrosphere includes

all water on Earth (including
surface water and ground
water)

This water can be found as

liquid, vapor or ice and makes
up the water cycle on Earth.
THE BIOSPHERE
The biosphere is the life zone of the Earth
and includes all living organisms, and all
organic matter that has not yet
decomposed.
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
Hurricanes (atmosphere) sweep across the ocean
(hydrosphere) and onto the land (geosphere), damaging
the dwellings of people (biosphere) who live along the
coast.
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
Hurricanes (atmosphere) sweep across the ocean
(hydrosphere) and onto the land (geosphere),
damaging the dwellings of people (biosphere) who
live along the coast.
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
VOLCANOES (geosphere) erupt, sending ash and
gases into the air (atmosphere) and sending lava
and ash down onto surrounding forests (biosphere)
and human habitations (biosphere).
SYSTEM INTERACTIONS
EARTHQUAKES (geosphere) can damage buildings which may kill people
(biosphere), as well as cause fires which release gases into the air (atmosphere).
Earthquakes in the ocean may cause tsunami (hydrosphere) which can
eventually hit land and kill both animals and people (biosphere)

BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES

It is any of the natural pathways by which

essential elements of living matter are
circulated. The term biogeochemical is a
contraction that refers to the consideration of
the biological, geological, and chemical aspects
of each cycle.
