Quadratic Equations

Prerequisite Knowledge
Polynomial
Any algebraic expression with all the exponents of the
variables belonging to the set of whole numbers, is a
polynomial.

Degree of a Polynomial
The highest power of the variable in the polynomial is called
the degree of the polynomial.
The Basics
Quadratic Equation
Any equation of the form p(x) = 0, where p(x) is a
polynomial of degree 2, is a quadratic equation.

Standard Form Of a
Quadratic Equation
Real coefficient of x2

ax2 + bx + c = 0
Real coefficient of x Constant
Solutions of Quadratic
Equations
In general, a real number α is called a root(solution)
of the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, if a(α)2 +
b(α) + c = 0. A quadratic equation has 2 complex
roots.
Methods To Find Roots

Formula Square

Factorization
I) Quadratic Formula
In general, for a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0,
the following formula gives the values of x which
satisfy the given quadratic equation.
II) Factorization
In general, for a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, the
equation is factorized into two factors, (x-α) and (x-β)
which are then equated to 0 to get x = α and x = β
respectively.
III) Completing The Square
In this method, the quadratic equation is written in the form of a perfect
square, and then further solved to get values of x which satisfy the equation.
Graph of Quadratic
Equations
For a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c, the following
table illustrates the shape of the graph based on
different parameters.
Link With Art
For In present day, shape of graphs of quadratic
equations are used in art styles, book covers,
designs of curtains, floor mats etc.
