SELF-CONCEPT
Self-concept is the way people think about
themselves. As a global understanding of oneself,
self-concept shapes and defines who we are, the
decisions we make, and the relationships we form.
Self-concept is our individual perceptions of our
behavior, abilities, and unique characteristics—a mental
picture of who you are as a person. Self-concept:

(1) is unique to the individual

(2) can be positive or negative
(3) has emotional, intellectual, and
functional dimensions
(4) changes with the environmental
context
(5) changes over time; and
Here’s a clear breakdown of why self-
concept is not fixed but develops across
your life:

1. LifeExperiences Shape Identity

2. Changing Roles and Responsibilities
3. Cognitive and Emotional Development
4. Feedback and Social Interactions
5. Personal Reflection and Self-Awareness
6. Societal and Cultural Change
(6) has a powerful influence on
one’s life.
Three different parts of self-concept:

 Self-image, or how you see

yourself. Each individual’s self-image
is a mixture of different attributes
including our physical
characteristics, personality
traits, and social roles.

Self-image doesn't necessarily

coincide with reality.
Example:
Person: Maria, a 17-year-old high school student
Self-image:

"I see myself as a shy and average-looking person.

I'm not very athletic, but I'm good at art and people
say I'm kind. I don’t think I’m popular, but I have a
few close friends who really know me.
ACTIVITY:
Maria’s self-image includes:

1. What is Maria’s physical perception?

2. What are Maria’s personality traits?
3. What are Maria’s abilities?
4. What are her social identities?
What This Shows:
Maria’s self-image includes:

Physical perception: "average-looking"

Personality traits: "shy," "kind"
Abilities: "good at art," "not very athletic"
Social identity: "not popular," "a few close friends“

Self-image is how a person sees themselves—physically, emotionally,

and socially. It may or may not match how others see them, and it can
be positive, negative, or mixed.
 Self-esteem, or how much
you value yourself. A number
of factors can impact self-
esteem, including how we
compare ourselves to others
and how others respond to
us. When people respond
positively to our behavior, we
are more likely to develop
positive self-esteem. When
we compare ourselves to
others and find ourselves
lacking, it can have a
negative impact on our self-
esteem.
Example of Self-Esteem:
Person: James, a 25-year-old recent college
graduate
Self-esteem:

"I feel good about who I am. I know I'm not

perfect, but I believe I'm capable and worth
respecting. Even when I make mistakes, I don't
let them define me. I try to learn and move
forward."
ACTIVITY

1. What is the positive self-worth in the

sentence?
2. What is his self-acceptance?
3. What is his resilience?
What This Shows:
James’s self-esteem includes:

Positive self-worth: He values himself.

Self-acceptance: He acknowledges imperfections without
losing confidence.
Resilience: He doesn’t let failure destroy his sense of value.

Self-esteem is how much you value and respect yourself.

It reflects your emotional judgment about your self-worth.
 Ideal self, or
how you wish you
could be.
Example of Ideal Self:
Person: Aisha, a 20-year-old university student
Ideal self:

"I want to be confident, independent, and successful

in my career. I imagine myself as someone who
speaks up in class, leads projects, and inspires
others. I also want to be healthier and more active,
someone who wakes up early and takes care of her
body."
ACTIVITY

1. What are her personality

goals?
2. What are her career
aspirations?
3. What are her lifestyle goals?
What This Shows:
Aisha’s ideal self includes:

Personality goals: Confident, independent

Career aspirations: Successful, a leader, inspirational
Lifestyle goals: Healthy, active, disciplined

Key Point:
Ideal self is the person you aspire to be—your goals,
values, and dreams about who you want to become.
Why is self-concept
important?
Knowing who you are will help you feel that
you have worth and value in this world.
When you can accept yourself for who
you are, it will be easier for others to
accept you, too. Learning about yourself
can help you develop lasting relationships
with others as well as help you make choices
that will direct your life in the path you want
to go.
The Benefits
of Self-Concept
 Happiness. You will be
happier when you can
express who you are.
Expressing your desires will
make it more likely that you
get what you want.
How will you express your
desire?
1. Through Words (Verbal/Written Expression)

a. Direct and Clear Language

When it's appropriate to be straightforward:

• "I really want to be a part of this project."

• "I desire a deeper connection with you."
• "I’ve always dreamed of traveling the world."
b. Poetic Language

When you want to express desire more gently or

romantically:

• "I find myself thinking about this more than I should."

• "My heart leans in your direction every time you speak."
• "There’s a pull in me I can’t ignore."
2. Through Body Language
Sometimes desire is best expressed nonverbally:

- Eye contact (sustained, but respectful)

- Open posture and genuine facial expressions
- Touch (only when appropriate and welcomed)
- Tone of voice (soft, enthusiastic, or intentional)
3. Through Actions
Actions often speak louder than words:

- Pursuing goals with persistence shows strong desire.

- Giving time or attention to someone expresses care and
interest.
- Creating or building something (art, music, writing,
business) can channel desire into tangible form.
- Acts of service or going out of your way for someone
signal emotional or romantic desire.
In Personal Development,
Desire isn’t just about romance—it drives ambition and
growth:

"I deeply want to become the best version of myself."

"I feel called to make a difference in this field."
"This is something I can't let go of until I see it through."
Tips for Expressing Desire Effectively

• Be authentic – don’t fake emotions; people can often

sense insincerity.
• Be respectful – especially in romantic or interpersonal
contexts; consent and comfort are key.
• Know your audience – how you express desire in a job
interview differs from expressing it in a love letter.
• Use timing wisely – sometimes waiting for the right
moment makes your expression more impactful.
 Less inner conflict.
When your outside actions
are in accordance with your
inside feelings and values,
you will experience less
inner conflict.
Inner conflict happens when you feel
confused or torn between different
thoughts, feelings, or choices.
For example:
• You want to tell the truth but are afraid it
might hurt someone.
• You want to rest, but you also feel guilty
for not working.
Why Is It Important?
• Helps you focus better
• Improves your mental health
• Builds stronger relationships
• Makes you feel more confident and happy
How to Have Less Inner Conflict?
1.Know Yourself – Understand your values,
goals, and emotions
2.Accept Your Feelings – Don’t fight your
emotions; listen to them
3.Make Time to Think – Slow down before
making choices
4.Talk to Someone – A friend or counselor
can help
5.Let Go of Guilt or Fear – Be kind to
What Does "Less Inner Conflict" Mean?
Having less inner conflict means:
• Feeling more at peace with yourself
• Making clear decisions without too much
stress

better
• Living in a more balanced and calm way
InSimple Words:

peaceful inside because your mind and
heart are working together, not against
each other.
 Better decision-making. When
you know yourself, you are able to
make better choices about
everything, from small decisions
like which sweater you’ll buy to
big decisions like which
partner you’ll spend your life
with. You'll have guidelines you
can apply to solve life’s varied
problems.
What is Decision-Making?
Decision-making means choosing what
to do in a situation.

• Thinking clearly before acting

• Choosing wisely based on facts and
feelings
• Avoiding regret by understanding the
results of your choice
Why Is It Important?
Good decisions can:

• Make your life easier and happier

• Help you solve problems
• Help you reach your goals
How to Make Better Decisions?
1. Think before you
act –
Take a moment to
pause
2. Look at your
options – What
choices do you
have?
3. Think about the results – What will happen
next?
4. Ask for advice
– Talk to someone
you trust
5. Learn from past
mistakes – What
worked before?
InSimple Words:
Better decision-making means making
smart and careful choices that help you live
well and feel good about what you do.
EXAMPLE SCENARIO
“What Should I Do?” – A Daily
Life Decision Challenge
Scenario:
“You have a big exam tomorrow, but your friends are
inviting you to a movie tonight. You feel stressed and think a
break might help, but you're also behind on studying.”

Answer These Questions:

• What is your main goal? (e.g., do well on the exam,
manage stress)
• What are your possible options? (List at least 3) (e.g., Go
to the movie, Stay home and Study for 2 hours, then relax)
• What are the possible consequences of each option
(pros and cons)? (see next slide)
• Which option aligns best with your goal?
3. Decision Chart Activity:
• Draw three columns: Option, Pros, Cons
• Fill in for each choice (e.g., go to movie, study, study a
little and then relax)
Now, it’s your turn…
 Scenario:

“It’s lunchtime and you only have 30 minutes. You forgot to

pack lunch.

To Do:
1. What is your main goal?

3. Best Choice (example):

• Walk to the healthier café.
Why?
“I’ll get some fresh air, eat something nutritious, and come back feeling more focused.”
 Self-control. When
you know yourself,
you understand what
motivates you to
resist bad habits and
develop good ones.
You'll have the insight
to know which values
and goals activate
your willpower.
Self-control means being able to stop
yourself from doing something wrong or
unhelpful — even when you really want to.

It also means choosing what’s right instead

of what’s easy or tempting.
Why Is Self-Control Important?
Self-control helps you:

• Stay calm in tough situations

• Make good decisions
• Avoid bad habits
• Reach your goals (like saving money,
studying, or eating healthy)
Examples of Self-Control
• Not yelling when you're

you make good choices
InSimple Words:
Self-control means staying strong inside,
even when it’s hard — so you can do
what’s best for you in the long run.
 Resistance to
social pressure.
When you are
grounded in your
values and
preferences, you are
less likely to say
“yes” when you
want to say “no.”
What Is Social Pressure?
 Social pressure is when people try to influence you
to do something — usually because they’re doing it too.
It can come from:
• Friends
• Classmates
• Social media
• Society in general
 Sometimes, it can be positive, like being encouraged
to study or be kind.
But often, it’s negative, like feeling pushed to lie,
cheat, or do things you don’t want to do.
What Is Resistance to Social
Pressure?
Resistance to social pressure means:
• Saying "no" when others try to make you
do something wrong or uncomfortable
• Staying true to yourself, even if others
disagree
• Thinking for yourself instead of copying
others
Why Is It Important?
Resisting social pressure helps you:
• Make better choices
• Keep your self-respect
• Stay safe and healthy
• Be a leader, not a follower
How to Resist Social Pressure?
1.Know your values – Be clear about what’s right
or wrong for you
2.Practice saying no – Be polite but firm
3.Choose good friends – Be around people who
respect your choices
4.Stay confident – Believe in yourself
5.Walk away if needed – It’s okay to leave a bad
situation
In Simple Words:
Resistance to social pressure means
having the strength to do what’s right for
you, even when others try to push you to
do something else.
 Tolerance and
understanding of
others. Your
awareness of your
own foibles and
struggles can help
you empathize
with others.
 Tolerance means accepting people who are
different from you.
Understanding means trying to see things from
their point of view.
 People may be different in:
• Religion
• Culture
• Language
• Opinions
• Abilities
• Appearance
Why Is It Important?
When we show tolerance and
understanding:
• We live peacefully with others
• We learn new things from different people
• We build respect and kindness
• We help make the world a better place
How to Practice Tolerance and
Understanding?
1.Listen – Pay attention to what others say and
feel
2.Ask questions – Learn about other cultures or
beliefs
3.Don’tjudge too quickly – Everyone has their
own story
4.Bekind – Even if you don’t agree with
someone
5.Remember we are all human – We all want
to be respected
In Simple Words:
Tolerance and understanding mean
accepting and respecting people, even if they
are not like you — and trying to see the world
through their eyes.
 Vitality and
pleasure. Being
who you truly are
helps you feel
more alive and
makes your
experience of life

ACTIVITY
PERSONAL
EFFECTIVENESS
What is Personal
Effectiveness?
Personal effectiveness is about how well a
person can manage their time, energy, and
skills to achieve their goals. It involves using
your strengths, improving your weaknesses,
and staying focused on what matters most.
Why is it Important?
Being personally effective helps you:
• Get more done in less time.
• Feel more confident and organized.
• Improve your relationships and
communication.
• Achieve personal and professional goals
faster.
Key Areas of Personal Effectiveness
Time Management

Knowing how to plan your day, set priorities,

and avoid distractions.
Goal Setting

Setting clear, realistic goals gives direction

and motivation.
Self-Discipline

Staying focused and avoiding procrastination.

Communication Skills

Being able to express yourself clearly and

listen well to others.
Emotional Intelligence

Understanding and managing your emotions and

responding well to others.
Emotional intelligence is about knowing how you
feel, why you feel that way, and what to do about it. It
also means being kind and understanding when other
people are feeling something too.
Continuous Learning

Always improving your skills and knowledge to

stay effective.
Simple Tips to Improve Personal Effectiveness

- Make a daily to-do list.

- Break big tasks into smaller steps.
- Avoid multitasking—focus on one thing at a time.
- Set deadlines and stick to them.
- Reflect on what you did well and what can improve.
In short…

Personal effectiveness isn’t about being

perfect; it’s about making small, consistent
improvements. When you manage yourself
better, you can achieve more, feel less
stressed, and enjoy life more fully.
ACTIVITY
“My Daily Pie”

 Materials Needed:
• Paper and pen

"Personal effectiveness is about how well we

manage our time, energy, and actions to achieve
our goals. Today, you’ll look at how you spend your
time in a typical day."
 Drawing the Pie (10 minutes)
 Ask each student to:
1. Draw a large circle on their paper (like a pie chart).
2. Divide
it into sections that represent how they usually
spend their 24 hours. For example:
1. Sleeping
2. Studying or school
3. Watching TV or using social media
4. Chores
5. Exercise
6. Hobbies or free time
 Be honest.
Reflection:

 Ask students to look at their pie charts and think about:

• Which activities take the most time?
• Are they spending enough time on important things (like
learning, self-care)?
• What would they like to change?
“What surprised you?” or “What
would you like to do differently to
be more effective?”
Wrap-Up:
Summarize by saying:

“Being personally effective doesn’t mean doing

more—it's about doing what really matters. Small
changes in how we use our time can lead to big
results.”
Next topic…
Here are some skills that will
greatly increase the efficiency
of any person who owns them:

 Determination. It allows
you to focus only on achieving
a specific goal without being
distracted by less important
things or spontaneous desires.
It may be developed with the
help of self-discipline exercise.
Determination means not giving up, even
when things are hard. It is the ability to keep
going, stay focused, and work hard until you
reach your goal.
It’s like saying, “I will keep trying no matter
what!”
Why is Determination
Important?
• Helps you achieve your goals:
Determined people don’t stop when things
get tough.
• Builds confidence: When you keep
trying, you learn and grow stronger.
• Overcomes failure: Everyone fails
sometimes, but determination helps you
try again.
• Inspires others: People admire and follow
those who never give up.
Examples of Determination
• A student studying hard to pass an exam,
even after failing before.
• An athlete practicing every day to
improve, even when tired.
• Someone learning a new skill, like playing
the guitar or riding a bike, and not giving
up.
How Can You Show
Determination?
• Set clear goals for yourself.
• Keep trying, even when you make mistakes.
• Stay positive and believe in yourself.
• Ask for help when needed, but never quit.
“Fall seven times, stand up eight.”

Japanese Proverb
Answer:

This means no matter how many times you

fail, you should always get back up and try
again.
Conclusion
Determination is the key to success. It
doesn’t matter how slow you go, as long as
you don’t stop. With determination, you can
reach your dreams and overcome any
challenge.
ACTIVITY
1. Pose a Challenge:
Choose a simple endurance task that gets harder over time. For example:
- Wall Sit (lean against a wall as if sitting in a chair — no chair!)
- Standing on One Foot
- Silent Freeze (stay completely still and quiet)

2. Give Clear Rules:

- Everyone starts at the same time.
- The goal is to stay in position as long as they can.
- If they stop, they can cheer others on — but no rejoining!

3. Encourage Along the Way:

- Say things like: “Keep going!”, “You’ve got this!”, “This is what determination looks like!”

4. Discuss Afterwards:
- “What made you want to stop?”
- “What helped you keep going?”
- “How did it feel to finish or push your limit?”

Define determination: “Trying your best and not giving up, even when it’s hard.”
Activity Title: "Don’t Give Up!"
(Endurance Challenge)
 Self-confidence. It appears in
the process of personal
development, as a result of getting
aware of yourself, your actions and
their consequences. Self confidence
is manifested in speech,
appearance, dressing, gait, and
physical condition. To develop it,
you need to learn yourself and your
capabilities, gain positive attitude
and believe that by performing right
actions and achieving right goals
you will certainly reach success.
Self-confidence means believing in
yourself and your abilities. It’s the feeling
that “I can do this” even when something is
new or challenging.
It’s not about thinking you’re perfect — it’s
about knowing your worth and trying your
best.
Why is Self-Confidence
Important?
- Helps you try new things: You’re more likely
to take on challenges and step out of your comfort
zone.
- Improves performance: When you believe in
yourself, you focus better and do better.
- Reduces fear and stress: Confident people
stay calm and think positively.
- Builds better relationships: Confidence helps
you speak up, share ideas, and interact with
others easily.
Examples of Self-
Confidence:
- Speaking in front of the class, even if you feel
nervous.
- Trying out for a school team or club.
- Answering a question even if you're unsure
— because trying is more important than
being perfect.
- Accepting mistakes and learning from them
without feeling bad about yourself.
How Can You Build Self-Confidence?
- Practice often: The more you do something, the
better you get at it.
- Think positively: Remind yourself of your
strengths.
- Set small goals: Achieving them gives you a
confidence boost.
- Surround yourself with supportive people:
Positive friends and teachers help you grow.
- Learn from mistakes: Failure is part of learning,
not a reason to give up.
“Believe you can and you're halfway
there.”

Theodore Roosevelt
Answer:

This means believing in yourself is already a

big step toward success.
Conclusion:
Self-confidence doesn’t mean you’re always
sure of everything — it means you’re willing
to try. When you believe in yourself, you
unlock your potential and become stronger
inside and out.
ACTIVITY
 Instructions:
1. Form a Circle:
Have all students stand or sit in a circle.
2. Start the Compliments:
One student starts by turning to the person next to them and
giving them a genuine compliment (e.g., “You always try your
best in class,” or “You’re a good listener”).
3. Keep It Going:
The student who received the compliment then turns to the next
person and gives them a compliment. Continue until it goes all
the way around the circle.
4. Optional Reflection:
After the circle is complete, ask a few volunteers how it felt to
give and receive compliments.
Questions:
1. How did it feel to receive a compliment?

ACTIVITY. “Try, Try Again”
Challenge
Activity Instructions:
Choose a Simple Skill-Based Task:
Pick a physical or mental challenge that students might not succeed at immediately, such as:

- Tongue twisters (e.g., “She sells seashells...”)

- Have students try to say the alphabet backwards from Z to A out loud.

Explain the Goal:

Tell students the focus isn’t on getting it right the first time—but on trying multiple times without giving up.

Let Them Try:

Give students several chances to try the task. Celebrate effort, not just success.

Encourage Reflection (Brief Discussion):

After a few rounds, ask:

What was challenging about this?

How did it feel to keep trying?
What helped you not give up?
How can persistence help you in school or life?

• Did your teacher understand and give
you another chance?
• Did using reminders help you remember
your homework afterward?

 Generating ideas. It helps you achieve
goals using new, original, unconventional ideas.
Idea is a mental image of an object formed by
the human mind, which can be changed before
being implemented in the real world. For
generating ideas, you can use a method of
mental maps, which allows you to materialize,
visualize and scrutinize all your ideas, which in
turn contributes to the emergence of new
ideas.
These are just some, but the most important
personal effectiveness skills which make the
achievement of any goal easier and less costly.
 What is Generating Ideas?
 Generating ideas means coming up with new
thoughts, solutions, or plans. It is the first
step in being creative, solving problems, starting
a project, or making something new.
 It’s
like asking yourself, “What can I do?” or
“What could be possible?”
Why is Generating Ideas
Important?
- Starts the creative process: No project or solution can
begin without an idea.
- Helps solve problems: More ideas give you more choices
for solving issues.

- Looking at things around you — nature, people, stories,
music
- Talking and brainstorming with friends or classmates
- Daydreaming or imagining new possibilities
How to Generate More Ideas:
Brainstorm: Write down all your ideas, even the silly
ones — they might help!
Ask questions: Like “What can I do differently?” or
“How can I improve this?”
Use mind maps: Draw a topic in the center and write
related ideas around it.
Look for inspiration: Books, pictures, nature, or other
people’s work.
Work in groups: Others might think of things you
didn’t.
Example:
If your teacher asks you to create a project on
“saving the environment,” you could generate
ideas like planting trees, recycling, making
posters, or starting a school campaign.
“Everything begins with an idea.” – Earl
Nightingale
