INTRODUCTION
Edge computing, a strategy for computing on location
where data is collected or used, allows IoT data to be
gathered and processed at the edge, rather than sending
the data back to a datacenter or cloud. IoT and edge
computing are a powerful way to analyze data in real-
time rapidly.
INTRODUCTION
The Internet of Things (IoT) is made up of smart devices
connected to a network—sending and receiving large
amounts of data to and from other devices—which
produces a large amount of data to be processed and
analyzed.
IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT OF
EDGE COMPUTING IN IOT
Edge computing plays a critical role in enhancing IoT capabilities by addressing many
of the challenges that arise when IoT devices rely solely on cloud computing
(Magazzo, 2024). Here’s how edge computing contributes to the significance of IoT:

1. Reduced Latency (Real-Time Processing):

2. Bandwidth Efficiency (Data Filtering):

3. Enhanced Security and Privacy (Local Data Processing):

4. Improved Reliability (Decentralized Architecture):

2. Industrial IoT (IIoT))

Predictive Maintenance: Edge computing allows industrial machinery to

monitor its own health and predict failures before they happen. Sensors on
equipment collect data, which is processed locally to detect anomalies and
notify maintenance teams, preventing costly downtime.

Automation and Control: In manufacturing plants, edge devices can

control robots and other automated systems in real-time, ensuring
precision and reliability without the delays associated with cloud-based
processing.

3. Smart Homes
Home Automation: Edge devices like smart thermostats, lighting systems, and security
cameras can process user preferences and environmental data locally, providing faster
and more personalized responses without relying on the cloud.

Energy Management: Smart meters and appliances can optimize energy usage by
processing data locally, leading to more efficient energy consumption and reduced
utility costs.

TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES USED IN ENABLING
EDGE COMPUTING IN IOT APPLICATIONS
Edge computing for IoT applications leverages various tools and
technologies to enhance processing capabilities, reduce latency, and
improve data security. These tools and technologies collectively enable
the implementation and management of edge computing solutions for
IoT applications, addressing various challenges such as latency,
bandwidth, and security
TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES USED IN ENABLING
EDGE COMPUTING IN IOT APPLICATIONS
Edge Devices and Gateways

 Raspberry Pi: A popular single-board computer used for edge computing due to its
versatility and cost-effectiveness.
 NVIDIA Jetson: Provides powerful GPU-based processing for AI and machine learning
tasks at the edge.
 Intel NUC: Compact, high-performance computers suitable for edge computing.

EDGE COMPUTING IN IOT APPLICATIONS
Edge Platforms

 AWS IoT Greengrass: Extends AWS cloud capabilities to local devices,

enabling them to act locally on the data they generate(AWS, 2024).
 Azure IoT Edge: Microsoft's cloud service that allows data processing and
analytics to be performed on IoT devices (Azure, 2024)
TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGIES USED IN ENABLING
EDGE COMPUTING IN IOT APPLICATIONS
Communication Protocols

 MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport): Lightweight messaging protocol for small
sensors and mobile devices.(MQTT, 2022)
 CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol): Specialized web transfer protocol for use with
constrained nodes and networks.
 AMQP (Advanced Message Queuing Protocol): Protocol for message-oriented middleware.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, edge computing is not just an enhancement to IoT systems but a
transformative force that unlocks new possibilities across various industries. By
bringing data processing closer to where it is generated, edge computing
addresses the limitations of traditional cloud computing, making IoT systems
more responsive, secure, and efficient.
CONCLUSION
As technology continues to evolve, the integration of edge computing with IoT
will pave the way for more innovative applications, driving the next wave of
digital transformation. Organizations that embrace this shift will be well-
positioned to harness the full potential of IoT, leading to greater operational
efficiency, better customer experiences, and a competitive edge in the market.
