    Analysis

    This is Washington's 6th road game in 11 days across four different time zones. Washington is traveling West-to-East (Seattle to Detroit), a route historically associated with sluggish performance. The game in Seattle on the 27th implies a red-eye flight or a travel day on the 28th, which would eliminate practice time. Detroit has enjoyed the comforts of home and is coming into this matchup well-rested. Since December, the Red Wings have posted an impressive 6-1 record after a loss. Washington gives up High-Danger Chances at a rate that ranks in the bottom third of the league and will be without two key defenders. Detroit’s offense ranks 5th in creating them. The Red Wings own the better special teams and Face-off win percentage.

    Analysis

    I know my cohort Jeff Hochman loves this play. I can't say I "love" any hockey play because one dude simply half-drunk in the net can win a game by himself by accident, but this does seem to set up well for the Wings. The Caps are free-falling and at the end of a long trip. And we might see history as Detroit's Patrick Kane -- I hate that the Blackhawks legend is a Red Wing -- is one point from becoming the all-time U.S.-born scorer in the sport. He will pass Reggie "Reg" Dunlop. I sure hope you get that; actually Kane would break a tie with Mike Modano. I'll address this in the newsletter.

    Analysis

    They could use another miracle at Oral Roberts as this season has gone off the rails and the Big Dance bids under Paul Mills seem like a dream. Mills of course headed off to Wichita State a few years ago and the Golden Eagles have since sunk to the bottom of the Summit, and not within single digits their last five losses. Among the many problems is ranking a poor 306th in rebound margin. Meanwhile the host Coyotes have at least won some games in the Summit, and even minus top scorer Isaac Bruns beat Omaha and pushed top contender St Thomas last week, with EKU transfer G Jordan Crawford assuming go-to duties, scoring at a 24.3 pg clip the past three.     Analysis

    Big Sky sources have insisted that Dan Monson's EWU wasn't as bad as its record, with a rugged pre-Sky slate and some close losses in league play distorting the W-L mark. They might be proving right as EWU has recovered with wins in three of five as Monson is getting more consistent production from his backcourt with transfer Gs Isaiah Moses (ex-UCR) and Kiree Huie (ex-Miami Fla) both accelerating their contributions in Sky action. We'll see if NAU's win over Northern Colorado last weekend (the first in loop play) triggers a revival in Flagstaff, but the Lumberjacks had lost seven straight prior, including three at the Skydome, and have been missing top scorer 6-9 Zack Davidson (14 ppg; foot), likely out until mid-February.
