Municipality

The municipality of So Sebastio do Ca (21,944 inhabitants in 2010; 11,&45 ha) is located 60 km north of Porto Alegre.

So Sebastio do Ca was established by the Guimares family in 1808. The settlement was soon known as Porto dos Guimares for the port established on river Ca, used for trade with Caixas do Sul, Porto Alegre and the neighboring areas. In 1848, the Guimares brothers decided to erect a church and asked Bishop Sebastio Dias Laranjeira to name its patron saint; unsurprisingly, the bishop proposed to dedicate the church to St. Sebastian. The dedication was accepted and the bishop rewarded the community by offering a wooden statue of the saint, which is still venerated. A plot to build the church was offered by Francisco Mateus; the church's cornerstone was blessed in 1864.
The municipality of So Sebastio do Ca was established on 1 May 1875 and the church was consecrated on 15 July 1875.
